Sorry for the super late reply. I love that Cyrano story. I have actually never read Cyrano. I know the nose tirade though because both my kids had to memorize it for school in 4th grade!

Actually, I read Bovary in French but Orgy and Bad Girl in English. They were fucking amazing. Thanks for the compliments. I am sort of between careers and have had the time to feed my reading obsession - lucky me! Aside from being trolled occasionally here on GR, enjoying the tracking of my reading and gathering other input into my reviews.

So, you decide that you are gonna read The Bad Girl. But you feel that due diligence first requires that you read The Perpetual Orgy, which in turn then shoulders you with the obligation not of merely reading Madame Bovary, but REREADING Madame Bovary! The Herculean effort of it all…where DO you find the time? Are you retired? Oh, and by the way, did you then, just to add to your effort, read the Flaubert in French and the Llosa in Spanish!? LOL! (I have not, by the way, forgotten that you told me that you do, in fact, read in French, so I am only half-joking. Do you read in Spanish as well?)

The closest that I ever came to this kind of (enjoyable) self-flagellation does not even compare in intensity but is, I think, a fun anecdote.

When the Royal Shakespeare Company came to NYC to perform, I went to see them. In addition to Shakespeare they played Cyrano de Bergerac. (I believe – not totally sure, though – that it was Derek Jacobi, whom I adore as an actor, in the lead role.) Apparently the RSC was not sufficiently impressed, however, with the Brain Hooker(?) translation which had up until that time been used almost exclusively for English-language productions of Cyrano, and so hired none other than Anthony Burgess (who, until that time, was unknown to me as other than a novelist) to retranslate it.

So, before going to see the play I read the Hooker and the Burgess translations. Preferred the latter.

Sadly, I have just learned (today!) that Burgess did major edits to his own translation, and that both his original translation and the re-edited version are out as books. Shit. That means that I have one more to read that I was unaware of!

Anyway, the due diligence of reading two Cyranos – both rather short if I remember correctly – pales in comparison to lining up Madame Bovary, The Perpetual Orgy, and The Bad Girl as a “trilogy”. You are making me look very, very bad, sir! Keep it up. I now have all three of the above books on my “To Read” list! Thank you.
