Science Technology Engineering, Arts, Math. It is so critically important to underline, highlight, and bold how important the arts are in our digital now. I'm a technologist. I love technology and what it does to help people. And I'll straight up tell you the most important courses I took during college had to do with ethics, philosophy, critical thinking, and communication. Why? Because these weren't adjacent or interest-driven skills to the core competencies I had around tech. I had little motivation to learn them because I didn't know anything about them. I'll straight up tell you that understanding these concepts has made me a significantly better technologist than if I had just stayed in my lane. If you're at AFCEA Belvoir's event supporting STEAM today, you're helping create a better tomorrow by giving kids the opportunity to know the arts. Give yourself a pat on the back. And say hi to the Dev Technology Group, Inc. team while you're there!
Today the Dev Technology team is participating in the AFCEA Belvoir Fall Golf Event. The AFCEA Belvoir Golf Tournament is an industry networking event and also supports the Chapter’s Scholarship Fund for students pursuing degrees in STEAM. College golf is following the trends of the current college athletics environment right now. It's an arms race. Alabama is spending $40 million on a golf facility. Vanderbilt is spending an additional $11 million on upgrades to its facility. Oklahoma is spending $7 million on renovations to its practice facility. You need millions to compete right now on the Division I level. A vast majority of the funding provided for new practice facilities is funded by private donors. So why are donors spending money on a non-revenue-generating sport? It's really the same answer as all the other sports. They want to win. A wrinkle to this is the mid-major schools. College golf has historically offered levels of parity. But mid-major schools generally have fewer resources than major colleges. And mid-major appearances in the National Championship are declining - there were only four this year. It's the lowest number in the last five championships. Mid-majors are going to have to find donors that are willing to help level the playing field. Check out the full piece below. https://lnkd.in/gbcN6FEc

Municipal courses are an absolutely integral part of golf's grassroots, providing opportunities to those who perhaps cannot afford the fees demanded by private members’ clubs or who want to learn to play in a more relaxed, less intimidating environment. They may not make it onto many ‘bucket lists’. They certainly won’t ever host The Open. But that’s not their purpose. Their entire reason for being is far more important than any of that. Take them away and you make golf inaccessible to a significant proportion of the population. You risk making the game everything that so many are trying hard to prevent it from becoming: the exclusive preserve of those with ‘means’. For any country, that would be terrible. But for Scotland, the 'Home of Golf', it would be utterly shameful. At bunkered, we passionately believe golf is a sport for all and I am grateful we have a platform to advocate for all that is great about it - particularly the less 'fashionable' parts; the parts that are under-appreciated and misunderstood. It has been great to have had the opportunity to represent these views through other outlets this week, including the Scottish Daily Mail - who invited me to write an op-ed on the issue - and BBC Radio Scotland. It's working, too. We learned yesterday that the closure-threatened Hollandbush has been given a reprieve by its council, whilst more than 5,000 people - including footballer John McGinn and top caddie Craig Connelly - have signed a petition calling for Dalmuir to be spared, too. Along with the two courses at Caird Park in Dundee, it will discover its fate in the coming weeks but Labour and SNP representatives from West Dunbartonshire Council have both indicated to me this evening that they will be voting against any proposal to close or reduce the course. At a time when golf is arguably more popular than ever, it's vital that we keep it accessible to all, and munis are a key part of that. Onwards 💪🏽

Solutions-Oriented, Creative, and Disruptive Employment Law Defense Attorney and Litigator at Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C.
Golf has long been the cliché networking social event for lawyers like me and other professionals outside of the traditional bars, lunches, and coffee. However, I have always noticed that there are several bars to entry: having sufficient skill; having sufficient time; having sufficient funds to purchase golf clubs; knowing the right people; and other more historic bars to entry that prevented everyone (and I mean everyone) from participating (which I would be remiss not to acknowledge). Lately, I have been thinking about changing the above as I progress in my own golf journey. Accordingly, like how other folks have put together social events through the Minnesota State Bar Association, I have been thinking of putting together a “shoddy golfers group” ALL lawyers and other professionals are welcome, where we play entry level courses, only play 9 holes, and everyone of all skill levels are welcome, which hopefully should address some of the above-mentioned barriers. I also have a spare set of clubs that I am happy to loan someone. Any interest? #MSBA #lawyers #minnesota #twincities #minneapolis #golf #networking

What about the social #integration of #golf in the USA? And what could the future look like? I discussed this in our Vision 2050 series with anthropologist Orin Starn from Duke University. He is not only an active golfer himself but has also published a book on Tiger Woods and numerous articles on golf in addition to his teaching activities at Duke. Enjoy reading!
