Critics Consensus

An unforgettable blend of the conventional and the singularly strange, Aline is definitely odd, but it's also oddly entertaining.

Kimberley Jones Austin Chronicle There are no insights here, only lavishly budgeted cosplay. Apr 21, 2022 Full Review Leslie Felperin Hollywood Reporter Initially strange, then mildly amusing, and eventually just kind of whatever, Francophone musical success story Aline is the very definition of neither one thing nor the other. Apr 19, 2022 Full Review Christy Lemire FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) There's a lot of affection in this portrayal... I wish it had stuck with the strength of its initial weird convictions throughout, though. Apr 19, 2022 Full Review Hector A. Gonzalez Loud and Clear Reviews Aline is a biopic freely inspired by the life of Celine Dion that’s, in most cases, on the brink of becoming an intentional farce. Rated: 2.5/5 Mar 24, 2024 Full Review Chris Feil Gawker Aline is the Goldschläger of musical biopics: unappetizing and decadent in all the wrong ways, but too absurd to not sample once. Dec 16, 2022 Full Review Christopher James The Film Experience Aline is a conundrum and a contradiction. More than any other recent biopic, Aline soldiers through all of the cliches and plot devices we’ve seen repeated ad nauseum. Yet, there’s a bizarre core that spins every scene on the axis. Cheryl H I really enjoyed learning about Celine Dion's life and career. I am a fan of her music, but I didn't know anything about her beyond the tabloid headlines about her marriage to her much-older husband. I thought this was a believable and sensitive portrayal of not just a superstar but a woman, mom, sister, and daughter. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Overall, while Aline tells an uplifting journey with fun, quirky or romantic moments, it also has moments that are forced and cliché.  The pacing is significantly up and down, radically changing from something exciting to something that's dull and predictable.  The choice to use an adult head for the younger portion of the back story in the first act is also an unwise choice.  Considering the film is an unofficial biopic of the life of Celine Dion, I hoped for something far more touching and heartfelt. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Tried watching, but it’s in French, and I couldn’t get the English subtitles to turn on in Amazon Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/08/22 Full Review Gino K C'est caricatural, Aline l'a crissement pas comme actrice en bon joual, c'est zéro crédible quand elle essaie de parler notre belle langue française du Québec. Une chance que les acteurs secondaires sont des Québécois, ça permet au film d'être au minimum correct, car sinon, ce serait un des pires navets que j'ai vus depuis un méchant bout! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/08/22 Full Review Mahdel Totalement grotesque et manque de crédibilité ! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/21/22 Full Review Read all reviews
