che c Firstly, it's great to see Molly Ringwald's back on the screen. Hands down, she clearly gets three stars, which quite frankly, is the maximum accolade this movie warrants. While it intended to be a psychological thriller, aiming to keep viewers guessing, it lacked a payoff and where o where was the crescendo?. Among the "what have you", Hari Nef's portrayal stood out as credible, though the same cannot be said for the others. Perhaps casting Winter Williams as Ruthie Nodd and Ashlynn Yennie as Cal could have injected more authenticity into the characters. Why not? Let those ladies redeem themselves. Character development was noticeably absent, and if anyone disagrees, please esplain to me. Spencer V's comprehensive review perfectly articulates my views, sparing me the need to reiterate. However, if the film's objective was to cultivate uncertainty and bewilderment, then it undeniably succeeded. Imagine if Tommy Wiseau's direction could have provided a more coherent narrative. Despite its flaws, there's something oddly captivating about it, prompting me to consider a second viewing with friends. I don't know why but I didn't hate it and I know I am suppose to. The premise opens with four friends traveling to a hotel that one of them inherited. Not that I could figure out why these people are friends. They don't even seem to like each other. This is made worse by the clunky dialogue throughout. The film tries to focus on different elements, including a creepy scene where one character sees a dining room full of people who are presumably dead. She also sees two random joggers that seem to be a reference to the girls in "The Shining" but just come of as comical. The psychological element is at play as well, leaning heavily on the "unreliable narrator" trope. And of course a killer with a chainsaw shows up too. Trouble is, there's no suspense. The tension falls flat. It's obvious who the killer is. What's not obvious is how much of the movie actually happens and how much is the psychosis of the killer. One such scene involves the killing of two people with a chainsaw right in the middle of a busy shopping center. People are walking along nearby and no one even seems to notice what's happening. Are we to infer from this that it was actually some kind of delusion brought on by the deep psychosis of the killer? How much of the film was real and how much was in her head? We don't know. The thing is, the film gives us nothing to judge what's real and what's not. It tries to focus on all these different elements but doesn't dedicate enough to developing any of them to actually succeed. The premise seemed interesting which is why I gave it a chance, but the characters were so obnoxious from jump street that I thought, "If they don't all get slaughtered here in the next 2 minutes, I'm out." Two minutes elapsed and all I got was vocal fry, godawful dialogue, and some bootleg Martha Plimpton yelling, "MOM! MOM!" while her friends made catty comments to each other. Even if the rest of the movie was ok, I'll never know and neither should you. Hard pass. This is the stupidest written, acted and directed movie I've seen in a while. These girls who go to this hotel supposedly as friends to renovate it, are NEVER believable as friends , the dynamics are ridiculous, scenes never finish through the whole thing, they're always separated throughout the flick even when they saw there was a killer on the loose, nobody ever calls 911 despite all this, and it's a shining rip off as well, only the super crappy generic, modern, version! I almost quit this in the first 10 minutes after seeing how crappy it looked, I should have!
