Critics Consensus

Content to let a very game Eddie Murphy bring all the heat, the fourth Beverly Hills Cop coasts on nostalgia but marks a welcome return for Axel Foley.

Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) It’s better than you had any right to expect it to be. Rated: 3/5 Jul 12, 2024 Full Review Nina Metz Chicago Tribune Murphy might be one of the most talented performers of any generation and it’s thrilling to see him back in the role that turned him into a movie star. Rated: 2.5/4 Jul 9, 2024 Full Review Rafer Guzman Newsday The heat is definitely off. Rated: 1.5/4 Jul 9, 2024 Full Review Sean Chandler Sean Chandler Talks About While it may not do anything particular new with the genre, it does deliver a fun new adventure with Axel Foley. Rated: B Jul 23, 2024 Full Review Austin Burke Austin Burke/Flick Fan Nation While this sequel struggles to tell a compelling overall story, there is plenty present that will pull fans into this world once more... The action is solid, and the score is full of retro goodness. Rated: 7/10 Jul 22, 2024 Full Review James Berardinelli ReelViews The fourth movie is in many ways better than it has a right to be and it's certainly a worthy way to dispose of a couple of hours lying on the couch at home, but this is hardly a triumphant return for Axel or Murphy. Chris S What made BHC a fans favourite is sadly lacking here, Eddie Murphy lacks any real energy which makes this movie a little one pace. Some nostalgia sprinkled in but not enough to save the movie. Like coming to America 2, Murphy seems tired and is acting from a chair. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/23/24 Full Review I. D 2 hours of predictable formulaic guff. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/22/24 Full Review James M I enjoyed the fresh EM comedy but ... 40 years later and all the cops are still cops? You people need to let these old guys retire. BTW, at least you could have freshened up the music. Ntl, if you liked the first one and feel nostalgic, you will like this too. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/22/24 Full Review Benjamin B As much are saying, this is far more enjoyable than expected to be. What stands out in this film is how well it’s shot, with an imagery of nostalgia and modern times blended together, incorporated with those swaggy synth riffs that never disappoint. Not to mention, Eddie Murphy is being Eddie Murphy again, backed up by a great cast of originals and new faces. A far too late sequel that was approached with intelligence, making you forget how long it’s actually been. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/21/24 Full Review Peter K Had almost lost hope on this franchise after Beverly Hills Cop III: but they did a great job on this one -- they took all the best attributes from the original and made a very good production. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/21/24 Full Review Dale P This is how it’s done when you want to make a movie “for modern audiences“ from an old IP. Retain everything that was good, and fix what needs to be fixed. Good job. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/21/24 Full Review Read all reviews
