I was staying in Victoria for a few days visiting friends, and we decided to try out the Korean restaurants that we happened to walk by. I ordered the sullungtang (ox-tail soup), while my husband ordered the ojingohbokum (grilled squid). The banchan came out, and we received seasoned mung beans instead of the usual kongnamul, marinated potatoes that were sweet instead of salty, mild kimchee, and a spinach salad (WTF???). After tasting the banchan, I realized that this place was adapted for Canadian tastes rather than being an authentic restaurant. That was fine because I do like fusion restaurants as long as they are tasty, and this place is tasty.
The sullungtang came out, and I was OK with the soup, but instead of sea salt, I was given regular salt and pepper. My husband's ojingohbokum was served over noodles, and it was almost a blend of a bibimnengmyun dish. Interesting take on the dish. Definitely NOT authentic! My husband wanted spicier dishes, but every dish came out mild. This is Korean for milder tastes, so if you can't handle spicy dishes, then this is a good choice to try out Korean for the first time.
I was slightly disappointed, but it wasn't like they didn't try to give us a good meal. It was just Korean food adapted for Canadians. You don't go into Panda Express and expect authentic Chinese. I just didn't know that this was fusion Korean-Canadian, and now I know. I would definitely go back to try other dishes, though, so I give it 3 stars.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Bryan C.Anchorage, AK01Apr 17, 2024
After so many days on the cruise line, we were so happy to find an authentic Korean restaurant.
The service and food were very good. Truly Korean!!!!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Aug 28, 2021
Unfortunately a complete disappointment. A few notes for those considering:
1) this is NOT a sister restaurant to the SURA in Richmond & Vancouver
2) call for resos but not overly busy
3) no free parking (street meter parking)
4) side dishes (there are 5) are decent but don't bother asking for refills because they cost $3
4) BBQ prices are atrocious -- better to just ferry over to Van for AYCE
5) the bibimbap is just meh
6) the lemon chicken (priced at a whopping $23) is trash -- more dough than chicken
7) service is decent but it takes a while to flag someone down
8) they do NOT take AmEx
Needless to say, NOT coming back and don't recommend.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Barmaan G.Victoria, Canada01Jun 20, 2023
I recently had the unfortunate experience of visiting Sura Korean restaurant in Victoria, and I must say that it left a bitter taste in my mouth. I had heard good things about the place and was excited to try their offerings, but my visit turned out to be a huge disappointment due to the treatment we received.
Arriving at the restaurant at 7:30 PM, well within their stated hours of operation, my party and I were shocked when we were promptly denied service and asked to leave. This abrupt refusal was both unexpected and unwarranted, as we were eager customers looking forward to enjoying a meal at Sura. The staff's demeanor towards us was quite disrespectful, leaving us feeling bewildered and humiliated.
What added insult to injury was the fact that as we left the premises and started searching for another dining option, we noticed Sura Korean restaurant welcoming new customers inside. To our dismay, these new patrons were of Asian descent, and it appeared that they were being provided with the service we were denied. This observation only intensified our sense of disrespect and injustice.
It is disheartening to encounter such discriminatory behavior in a place that is meant to be welcoming and inclusive. Discrimination in any form is unacceptable, and it undermines the principles of fairness and equality that we expect from establishments that serve the public.
While I cannot comment on the quality of the food or the overall dining experience at Sura Korean restaurant, I am deeply disappointed by the treatment my party and I received. It is essential for businesses to treat all customers with respect, regardless of their ethnicity or any other distinguishing factor.
I hope that Sura Korean restaurant takes this review as an opportunity for reflection and growth. Discrimination should never have a place in any establishment, and I sincerely hope that they reevaluate their policies and practices to ensure that every customer receives equal treatment and respect.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Ruben L.Adelanto, CA8149132Jul 22, 2022
It was okay, a bit overpriced.
Staff were friendly but not worth the price.
The dining room was kept clean.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Rebecca F.Victoria, Canada1230127Jan 7, 2023

Incredible food, I know it must be tough these days to keep staff on but we've never once been disappointed here. Cannot get enough!

Went there with my friends, at 7:30. Didn't let us in, saying they're closed, when there was multiple other customers in. Then minutes after that they let other customers in again. weird af.

We tried a few items here but overall, the taste is not great. The shrimp and mussels in the tofu seafood soup did not taste very fresh. In fact, I felt the quality of the seafood is so questionable that I did not want to eat it. The tempura smelled like it was fried in old oil. The sides were decent though. Service was sweet but I don't think I will be back due to the food quality here.

This place is right up the street from China town and near the Public Market. Service was super fast and the food was great. It's not cheap, but we had to take food home. Plus it came with miso soup too. Great place for a family to cook and eat as you go.

Sura was my first time going to Korean BBQ years ago, and I've been here several times, but none recently. My go-to was always the combo for 2, and I'd split it with a friend. While it was tasty and a fun experience having someone come cook your food at the table, the banchan is definitely lacking in quantity compared to other KBBQ places. If the combo is still $40 though, I think it's worth it.
I got the bibimbap once and was super underwhelmed, it had barely any flavor, and now I'd be nervous to try their other singular entrees if they can't get bibimbap right..Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
