LIVERMORE, CA — A young child brought a knife to class at the Valley Montessori School, a TK-8 private school in Livermore.

The student brought a small, folding camping knife to school on Monday, Dec. 4 to show a friend who had never seen one, Head of School Patti Wilczek told Patch in an email. A teacher found the knife within minutes of arriving on campus that morning, and confiscated the knife, Wilczek said. The student was sent home for the day.

Staff interviewed students and teachers in proximity to the incident, and determined that the knife was not opened, and no threats were made. Staff determined the incident did not pose a safety risk, and school continued as usual.

“That said, our emergency protocols reflect a no tolerance policy for weapons, which is why the small knife was immediately confiscated and the child was sent home,” Wilczek said.

Livermore Police Department spokesperson Azenith Smith told Patch that the school did not contact the police department.

"Based upon the information we received, it was determined that there was no threat to students or staff. The police, therefore, were not notified," Wilczek said.
