Joliet Delays Garbage Pickup, Offers Tips To Stay Warm

JOLIET, IL - Even though the local public schools will be closed, Joliet City Hall be open as usual on Wednesday, but the city issued a number of public safety bulletins to help the city's 150,000 residents and their pets avoid the deadly cold over these next two frigid days.

Garbage collections

UPDATED: Waste Management will not be picking up garbage or recycling on Wednesday, Jan. 30 or Thursday, Jan. 31 due to landfill closures caused by extreme low temperatures.

All residents whose normal garbage day is Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, please put out your garbage only on Friday morning before 6 a.m. (or Thursday night if possible). Do not put out recycling toters or white goods this week. If your garbage is not picked up on Friday, Waste Management will recover it on Saturday. Again, residents whose normal pickup day is Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, please put out garbage toters only on Friday. Recycling pickup will start up again next week.

City Hall stays open

The city offices in downtown Joliet will be open as normal from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Warming Centers in Joliet

The key locations for Joliet are the Catholic Charities Daybreak Center and the MorningStar Mission. Their addresses are 611 E. Cass St. and 350 E. Washington St.

How to prevent pipe freezing

The city urges people to open cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around your plumbing. Insulate pipes in cold prone areas with pipe insulation. If your pipes are already frozen, shut off water immediately at the inside main value, the city said. Use warm air to thaw a frozen pipe, but never use an open frame.

Keep pets inside

The city reminds people that "this dangerously cold weather is deadly to animals, if let outdoors. Bring your pets indoors. Do not leave your pets alone in any vehicle. Also, keep salt away from your pets' paws. If you see an animal outdoors and in need, call the Joliet Animal Control at 815-720-0333 to report an animal in distress.

Important information for City of Crest Hill residents:

Crest Hill's City Hall Administrative Offices will be closed Wednesday, January 30, 2019 and reopen at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31.

“The safety of our employees and residents is our number one concern. If you don’t have to travel in these conditions its best to stay home. City Hall will be open as a warming center and hose who need to access the warming center can call the Police non-emergency number at 815-741-5111,” said Mayor Ray Soliman in a press release.

Garbage collection will also be suspended in the City of Crest Hill on Wednesday. Collection services will resume on Thursday, January 31, 2019 with the route delayed by one day for the remainder of the week.

Residents of Crest Hill are encouraged to use common sense during this period of extreme cold and to have patience with Police and Public Works crews responding to calls. Residents are encouraged to call 9-1-1 for emergencies and (815) 741-5111 for any other assistance needed, the press release noted.
