Severe Storm Warning, Watch: 60 MPH Winds, Hail Possible

ILLINOIS — Severe storms could bring heavy rain, flooding, wind gusts of up to 55 mph and hail, with a special weather statement in effect for Will, Grundy and Kendall counties. A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect in Cook County until noon.

A severe storm watch was also in place until 6 p.m. for Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kendall and Will counties.

Damage to roofs, siding and trees is possible, according to the National Weather Service.

A flood advisory was in effect for Cook, Grundy, Will, Kankakee, LaSalle and Livingston counties. The National Weather Service said weather spotters reported heavy rain early Sunday, saying more than two inches had already fallen with reports of 1 to 1.5 inches of rain in 30 minutes.

Areas that will experience flooding include Joliet, Orland Park, Tinley Park, Oak Forest, New Lenox and Homer Glen. Another 1 to 2 inches of rain is expected across the area, creating minor flooding along creeks, streams and urban areas and ponding of water on roadways.

Just before 8:30 a.m., Doppler radar showed strong storms moving northeast from Coal City with winds in excess of 40 mph, expected to hit areas including Joliet, Orland Park, Lockport, New Lenox, Homer Glen, Mokena, Frankfort, Morris, Channahon, Shorewood and Manhattan.

The NWS said Sunday brings the risk of strong thunderstorms with isolated wind gusts of up 60 mph, hail the size of nickels and localized heavy rainfall.

Excessive heat risk was expected southeast of I-55 with temperatures near 90 degrees and a heat index around 100 degrees.
