Okay, this book took me forever to finish which is typically unheard of for me. I really enjoyed These Hollow Vows and These Twisted Bonds last year so I thought I would really enjoy this one. Unfortunately that wasn't the case.
There's so many tropes in this book that I adore, but Ryan failed to utilize them properly and the story was a big flop.
╰┈➤ First, and speaking as a reader who not that long ago read the duology that this is spinning off from - there wasn't much information given about the human realm, the rulers, who these humans are and why they have magic.
I felt a little thrown into the thick of it, I can't even imagine how someone who hasn't read the first two would feel. Totally lost I would imagine.
The story has the bones to be something great but I feel the author squandered opportunities away on boring and insignificant conversations - so many pages just snail-paced along and for what?
There was a lottttt of repetition. Over and over again we're told certain things - I got the memo - moving along please?
I literally started skimming around the 40% mark, then skipped from 60% to 80% then sped read to the end. I felt like a prisoner in this story and I just wanted to escape it.
╰┈➤ These so called big revelations at the end? I honestly thought it was common knowledge not an actual plot twist? So add predictable to boring, slow and repetitive.
Jas is one of the most bland FMC's I've read in a good long while. Whiny and meek. Non stop complaining.
Felicity was not much better, however I did appreciate her more- but having the story split between her and Jasalyn did nothing for either character.
Felicity's storyline is more intriguing but got cut off and was underdeveloped due to half of the book belonging to slog-fest rock personality that is Jas.
Unfortunately, I don't believe I'll continue this series.

This book started out engaging enough but somewhere around the middle I started to lose interest and my mind drifted off. I then just started speeding through to get to the conclusion.
I didn't like any of these characters at all and had a hard time believing that they were actually teenagers.
The book isn't necessarily bad but it really left no impression on me either.

After thinking on it a while last night and this morning, I think I'm going to settle on 3 stars.
In a nutshell, this was a disappointing installment. I felt that Roberts relied too heavily on the romantic relationship between Kai and Pae and didn't move the story along enough. That's not to say that 3 stars is a bad rating because it's not, I did love some aspects of the story.
But it felt inadequate. Look, I'm all for the relationship between these two but I felt like it came across a little surface level and lacking depth considering how book 1 ended. There has to be a wider range between these two. Take us through it, gut us. Leave us in limbo for a while.
The anger and resentment they felt towards each other felt like a joke. Not figuratively, literally- like hehe haha. Pae seemed emotionally flat when it came to Adena. A little less banter and 'ocean eye gazing' would have gone a long way here.
So Mac just dropped off the face of the earth for this book?
No sufficient mention of Adena? After the ending of Powerless and after Powerful? Pretty cold.
The ending was a let down for me considering it's an easy wrench to throw into the mix.
I'll come back and refine this review later - kinda just throwing some thoughts out this morning.

Iris Hollow and her two older sisters are unquestionably strange. Ever since they disappeared on a suburban street in Scotland as children only to return a month a later with no memory of what happened to them, odd, eerie occurrences seem to follow in their wake. And they're changing. First, their dark hair turned white. Then, their blue eyes slowly turned black. They have insatiable appetites yet never gain weight. People find them disturbingly intoxicating, unbearably beautiful, and inexplicably dangerous.
But now, ten years later, seventeen-year-old Iris Hollow is doing all she can to fit in and graduate high school on time--something her two famously glamourous globe-trotting older sisters, Grey and Vivi, never managed to do. But when Grey goes missing without a trace, leaving behind bizarre clues as to what might have happened, Iris and Vivi are left to trace her last few days. They aren't the only ones looking for her though. As they brush against the supernatural they realize that the story they've been told about their past is unraveling and the world that returned them seemingly unharmed ten years ago, might just be calling them home.
So, just some brief thoughts - I was a little underwhelmed with the story. It definitely has a spooky/dark fairy tale vibe but I was left wanting more.
For one, I was most intrigued by Grey Hollow and wanted to know more about her, but was left out in the dark because we follow Iris Hollow her goody two shoes sister instead. All of the key plot points were happening to Grey and it was frustrating being told instead of shown what was going on with her. I think the story would have hit different if told from Grey's POV.
"I wanted to live in her skin, to know what it was like to be as beautiful and mysterious as Grey Hollow."
Aside from Grey, the only other character that I was invested in was Tyler - IYKYK.
I really just felt all of the characters were a little flat and never really evolved.
In the beginning of the book, the setting was fairly creepy and eerie but as the story progressed the descriptions felt repetitive and a bit redundant to the point it lost it's intrigue for me. I'm not saying the writing was bad, just a little overdone which had my mind wandering off to other things and not staying as engaged as I would have liked.
The twist at the end was pretty predictable to me and I saw it from the beginning, it still worked well within the story but I just wished there was more mystery and more lore....more
