RWNZ have put together a report which includes recommendations for Government to improve its preparation, response and recovery measures in rural communities, for adverse events 🙌 This has been gathered through our North Island Weather Event (NIWE) project which was established last year by the Ministry for Primary Industries. This was to support the recovery of rural communities and primary industries affected by the North Island weather events, including Cyclone Gabrielle that caused unprecedented flooding and damage across parts of the North Island ⛈ RWNZ’s NIWE programme had two phases. ➡Hosting community events for wellbeing and connectedness in areas affected by North Island Weather Events including Northland, Greater Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Tairawhiti, Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa. ➡Organising pastoral care support and/or visits to rural families affected by North Island Weather Events. Our fourth #roundtable took place this month in Bristol, co-hosted by Navigate Charity, focusing on #FuelPoverty in #rural communities and its relationship with #MentalHealth issues. Observations included: ⚡ Though small rural communities can be very close knit, there are still high levels of #isolation and residents are often reluctant to share their struggles with fuel poverty or mental health with friends or family because they feel there is a #stigma attached. ⚡ #Infrastructure in rural areas is not as developed as in urban locations, including transport, the internet and public services, which can present practical and cost #barriers to accessing #advice and #support. ⚡ In rural areas there are still many homes that are off grid and not connected to mains gas or electricity. This is an underappreciated issue that is not often accounted for in national energy poverty strategies and requires a different set of #solutions. With your support, his team was able to change her life by providing her with a bed. In our ongoing efforts to reach remote communities like Pokot, Kenya, where poverty conditions are severe and widespread, we've encountered heartbreaking situations where children and mothers suffer greatly due to the lack of clean water. Many families with limited access to basic amenities live in makeshift shelters, such as mud huts. Economic opportunities are scarce, and residents often struggle to meet their daily needs. However, the need for clean water remains urgent in these impoverished communities. 💧 That's why we're working tirelessly to bring clean water to Pokot. The team is actively planning to construct a 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐫-𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐢𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞, delivering water from a mountain spring directly to the heart of the village. This initiative has the power to transform lives and will impact thousands of residents. Interesting Observations Our Mongolian visit showed us no homeless people loitering anywhere in Ulaanbaatar. Nor did we see graffiti or garbage. Yes, there were gravel lanes that we walked down to see places but no eye sores anywhere. We encountered homelessness, garbage, dreadful odours in premier cities in the world. We will not mention them here but very famous cities. Homelessness rife, beggars, garbage and graffiti. Some places looking derelict too. Not so in a little known place like Ulaanbaatar. Most people dressed well and seemed not lean and hungry looking. In fact the boys we met in an ger/tent looked chirpy, well fed and dressed. Makes one wonder. How some countries are rich but have all these issues( homelessness, garbage, smell and graffiti) in shovel loads while others who are not wealthy, don't visibly have these issues. What is happening to the wealth in these countries? How do poor countries do it better than these "rich" ones? Thoughts?

Can we just start making sense out of non-sense! It doesn't make sense to me that we have so many people homeless - sleeping rough when we have so many empty, vacant buildings in various shapes and sizes. It doesn't make sense to me than in times of natural disasters we can mobilise immediate shelter to support people impacted. Yet for the 1000's of people impacted by homelessness in this national disaster, with 100's of people dying - we cannot do the same, it just doesn't make sense. We need our governments to start making sense - please! Providing emergency food relief has become normalised in our communities - out of necessity. The scale of the problem is off the charts and community centres and neighbourhood centres are often providing this support, without adequate funding. Thats why StreetSmart funds food relief programs, and community meals, at these services. "It's quite common across the neighbourhood centres that they're a front point now for people experiencing homelessness, food insecurity and domestic violence," This situation, of people going hungry, is not OK. We shouldnt need food relief programs at this scale. We need to work towards eradicating poverty and a first step is to #raisetherate of income support and other support payments. Lets recognise that people on the lowest income are in crisis. Imposing a fine will not achieve what the City of Wodonga intends it will. It will not clean up the city or remove rough sleepers. It's a purely punitive response to a far more complex issue. LGAs would far better serve their communities in addressing rough sleeping by: 1. Advocating to Government at State and Federal level to address homelessness, housing supply, and affordability issues in their catchments. 2. Work out what can be done locally to provide access to amenities on council owned land such as showers, toilets and well lit areas. 3. Speed up local planning processes 4. Amending the proposed local law to exclude homeless people and rough sleepers from the fine process. You can't hide or solve homelessness by fining vulnerable people.
