The MCMS Football team moved to 2-0 on the season this week with a 7-0 win over Henderson Middle from Jackson. The team defeated the Jones County 8th grade team 15-0 on Aug 21st. Against Jones County, the defenses of both teams were on full display. However, it was the 4 forced turnovers by the Dogs that made the difference. On the Hounds first possession, the Bulldogs Mason Thomas was able to strip the ball carrier of the ball and then he returned the fumble to the Hounds 22yd line. On the next play, QB JP Martin scrambled around and found Brayden Drury wide open in the flats. Drury took the ball in for the score. The Bulldogs were able to add the 2pt conversion on another Martin to Drury pass. It was all defense after that score. Both offenses found it tough going. In the 3rd quarter, Jones’s quarterback looked to find a streaking receiver, however the Dog’s Cole Pace stepped in front of the pass for the interception. Pace took the ball in for another Bulldog score. Don Chandler added the extra point for a 15-0 Dog lead. Against the Tigers of Henderson, the Bulldog offense did just enough. The Bulldog defense did the rest. In the second quarter, Bulldog linebacker Barrett Turner picked up a loose fumble, unknown to just about everyone in the stadium, and returned it 50yds for a touchdown. Don Chandler added the extra point for a 7-0 lead. The Bulldog offense struggled to find its footing but the defense picked up the slack.  Zachariah Stewart  also added an interception. While the Bulldogs have been able to win these two games, Coach Smallwood says they have to get better. “The offense has been bad. We’ve been able to do just enough but that’s not enough. We’ve got to be able to score points. We can’t rely on the defense all the time. It’s something that we’ve got to put more focus on going forward”. The Bulldogs play at Pike county next.
