Monroe County Commissioners unanimously approved on Tuesday, July 19 allowing up to six hours of overtime per weekend for a Monroe County water department employee to install water meters.

Also, at the suggestion of District 2 commissioner Jim Ham, commissioners unanimously approved Tuesday transferring road department employee Kelly Ivey to the water department. In addition to this, commissioners unanimously approved hiring a contractor, USIC Locating Services, to perform utility locates for the water department. The county will pay USIC $12 per locate call of which there are about 10 to 15 daily.

The changes came at the request of water department head Bentley Cox, who said his department has gotten behind on its work in recent months due to a shortage of manpower.

Cox said, “I need some help, and I need some permanent help and someone that’s going to be there to work. That’s all I’m asking.”

With Ivey shifting to the water department, commissioners also unanimously approved moving two truck drivers from the recycling department to the road department. All of the changes took effect on Monday.
