Critics Consensus

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's action-packed plot, dazzling visuals, and irreverent humor add up to a sequel that's almost as fun -- if not quite as thrillingly fresh -- as its predecessor.

Kambole Campbell One Room With A View While it may not have the novelty of its predecessor, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is hilarious, brimming with pathos, and real pretty to boot. Rated: 4/5 Aug 25, 2018 Full Review K. Austin Collins The Ringer Even as Vol. 2 proves to be overlong and needlessly complex, with a last act that doesn't merely drive the point home so much as hold you hostage to it, the movie proves endearing. Aug 10, 2017 Full Review David Sims The Atlantic In Marvel lingo, Guardians 2 feels like a great six-issue arc, the kind of storytelling that used to be the backbone of superhero comics. Jun 16, 2017 Full Review Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) The second installment richened the characters while also giving Michael Rooker’s Yondu one of its best character arcs. Feb 27, 2024 Full Review Manik Sharma Firstpost ...quirky, mischievous and authentic... Jan 25, 2024 Full Review Joseph Garcia Dynamic Duel Podcast The humor and character relationships compensated for what I perceived as a slightly weaker story compared to the first film. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/22 Full Review Anthony L James Gunn does it again, and transports us back to a world where you're guaranteed to laugh Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/01/21 Full Review Quentin James Gunn follows up with this sequel and set up the future of the GOTG nicely for a part 3. Lots of laughs, action, and a lot of Baby Groot! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/22/22 Full Review David C Perdió la gracia la historia no está mal aún que se me hizo muy lenta la película Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/20/24 Full Review Kevin P An amazing sequel to easily one of Marvel's best. It keeps evolving the story and worldbuilding as everyone gets a great character arc, with Starlord, Yondu, and Gamora's arcs being particularly heartbreaking and impactful. Kurt Russel kills it as Peter Quill's dad and the revelations with his true intentions and just how casually he thinks of it all was genuinely shocking. The art direction is gorgeous and easily one of the most colorful movies of the entire MCU. The movie is just as hilarious as the first one and does a solid job balancing this out with some genuinely bittersweet drama. The 70s/80s retro soundtrack hits it out of the park once more and synch in perfectly with each scene they're implemented into. The best of which including the energetic "Mr. Blue Sky" opener, the large-scale epic one-sided slaughter with Yondu's arrow to the beat of "Come a Little Bit Closer", and the tear-jerking ending with the firework finale as Peter comes to grips of appreciating his flawed-but-loyal foster father Yondu while accepting that his biological father was a monster and isn't worth idealizing or even stewing over anymore. All while Gamora and Nebula grow closer and Rocket accepts his crew as the family he always wanted. It's a beautiful ending to an emotional rollercoaster with great action, laughs, and tears along the way. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/17/24 Full Review Read all reviews
