What to Know

Critics Consensus

Kevin Costner doesn't lack for ambition as he sketches this frontier saga across the widest of canvases, but Horizon's first chapter proves too diffuse in scope for it to satisfy as a self-contained endeavor.

Peter Rainer FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) There's nothing original about it... But I thought it was a serviceable Western. Jul 13, 2024 Full Review Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) The three-hour epic is dull, frustrating and sleep-inducing. Rated: 2.5/5 Jul 12, 2024 Full Review Jake Wilson The Age (Australia) On its own, however, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is a long trek to nowhere very much. Rated: 2.5/5 Jul 11, 2024 Full Review Collin Garbarino WORLD Costner wants to make epic cinema, but with its battling storylines Horizon feels more like prestige television. This three-hour first chapter would have been more enjoyable and easier to follow if it had been four TV episodes. Rated: 1/4 Jul 20, 2024 Full Review John Serba Decider An attempt to establish the Kevin Costner Wild West Extended Universe. It’s rough sledding so far, and makes him look less like the accomplished filmmaker we know him to be, and more like he doesn’t know what he’s doing. Jul 19, 2024 Full Review Dustin Rowles Pajiba The actual problem with Horizon is that it’s not a movie. It’s a television show. Jul 19, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Wombat Picture quality was poor. Main actress seems overacting and repetitive acting style. Parts of previews shown on talk shows were not in this movie. Actors did not speak clearly. Time jumps made plot line confusing and disjointed. Love story not believably conveyed by actors. Camera angles of actors weird. Abrupt cuts. Not made clear which Native America tribes were represented at different times. Appreciated attempt at an old fashioned Western and landscape shops. Good horseback riding stuntmen. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/22/24 Full Review Judy I believe it had the potential for being a fabulous movie however, it seems as if the storyline or storylines moved all over the place with little consistency or follow up. I thought it to be confusing and we discussed with other people in the theater, all feeling the same way. Very disappointing particularly for as long as the movie is. We are big Kevin Costner fans, however. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/22/24 Full Review LetterJ13 Too disjointed. Characters disappear throughout 3 hour runtime with zero explanation. Multiple scenes from trailer not going to show up until part 2. Waiting forever for this movie to reveal a storyline. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/22/24 Full Review Marjorie Terrible! Not worth the time or money. No plot, no character development, no sense of continuity. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/22/24 Full Review Jesus Gonzalez I don't understand all the negative reviews, I enjoyed thus movie and looking forward to chapter 2 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/22/24 Full Review David G It's a little disjointed at times but I enjoyed all of the story lines.
