What to Know

Critics Consensus

Road House updates a cult classic for a new generation, happily replicating the original's emphasis on cheesy brawn over narrative brains.

Audience Says

Road House can sometimes be so bad it's good, but more often, the uneven acting and ridiculous story are just disappointing.

Rafer Guzman Newsday The gonzo magic of the 1989 original is gone, but there’s enough bone-breaking action here to satisfy B-movie aficionados. Rated: 3/4 Apr 8, 2024 Full Review Philip De Semlyen Time Out The combination of Gyllenhaal’s easy charm, some Florida sunshine and at least one fight scene for the ages make this Road House worth stopping by. Just try to grab a seat in a quiet corner. Rated: 3/5 Apr 1, 2024 Full Review Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) More dynamic and less strange than the original, this remake is a hell of a good time as long as you don’t think too hard about any of it. But it probably won’t reach cult status, it’s neither excellent nor terrible enough for that. Rated: 3/5 Apr 1, 2024 Full Review Chuck Bowen Style Weekly (Richmond, VA) This “Road House” is action-heavy and violent, with none of the one-liners and ludicrous character stuff for which the Swayze original is remembered fondly. Jul 10, 2024 Full Review Archi Sengupta LeisureByte.com Forgettable and very camp, there’s something about Road House that isn’t just silly but entertaining because it is just so stupid. Rated: 2/5 Jul 4, 2024 Full Review Nelson Acosta Koimoi Road House feels more like a special pilot to a TV series than an actual theatrical film release, and while the movie can be fun, it can also be inconsistent in its narrative and visual choices. Dustie H Was it entertainment? Yes. Was it good? Absolutely not. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/21/24 Full Review Robert F Remakes of classic, iconic films are a tough task. Remaking the ultimate “guy flick” in today’s Hollywood might be impossible. Unfortunately, for this version of the Patrick Swayze action flick, the filmmakers chose an odd lead who comes across as eerily nice and a villain who is stunningly silly (as well as a bad actor). The film comes across too campy and ridiculous to really draw your interest. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/08/24 Full Review Audience Member From a cameo of post malone to mysterio actor Jake Gynhall i kinda liked it but creed is far better Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review A.L.Jude P Whatso ever the ratings say, this is highly enjoyable. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Jason W Not the worst remake of a great movie. I watched it thinking it would be really bad. As most remkes ruin the original. I expected it to be as bad if not worse than the Red Dawn remake. Jake Gyllenhaal is a great actor and I've enjoyed his other movies. But he has no Patrick Swayze and I think that's what made the original Road House so good. Now if I had not seen the original first the remake would be a 5 star movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/06/24 Full Review Jack S This movie was so bad I had to make a Rotten Tomatoes account to leave a review on it. First and most importantly, the CGI in the fighting scenes looked unrealistic. The movements were unnatural and punches looked telegraphed at times. The first fighting scene with Post Malone was especially bad. Secondly, they turned the original character Swayze perfected into a suicidal psychotic antihero. When he started talking about being pushed to the edge, gets ice to put a dead body on, and confesses his plot to a guy he tied up to frame for the murder, he comes off way more like GoldenEye than Ethan Hunt. If they were trying to make a complicated antihero broken by killing(?)/almost killing his friend during a UFC match, they need to make his character development more realistic. Lastly and this is more of a pet peeve, but why would you have Conor McGregor play a character other than himself in a movie where the main character had a backstory where he fought UFC? It’s confusing. For the first 5 minutes McGregor was in the movie I was trying to figure out if he’s playing an exaggerated version of himself who maybe beat Dalton back in the day or an entirely different character. To be fair McGregor was really good in it, definitely the best acting by far. Only giving it 1 star because the decision to remake the movie in the Keys was cool and had value added in the storyline.
