What to Know

Critics Consensus

Society of the Snow brings masterful technical skill to bear on its tale of real-life tragedy, but none of that spectacle comes at the expense of its simple, powerful message.

Audience Says

An outstanding recreation of a grueling true story, Society of the Snow isn't the first film to dramatize these events, but it might be the best.

Valerie This was beautifully shot and gave a poignant and non-sensationalized account of this true story. The acting was incredible and I appreciated how they acknowledged every person in the crash. I hope the survivors felt that this successfully represented their experience. Seeing the pictures of the real survivors at the end made me cry, plus the scene where the father is reading the names of the survivors and his son is one of them. *tears* Bravo to this excellent film. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/07/24 Full Review danish Inspiring. Beautifully shot. Oscar winner. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/24/23 Full Review Garth S This movie is beautiful in its portrayal of the stark, Andean mountains. But beyond that, it seems to exist only to dramatize that the survivors did not in fact "descend into cannibalism," but rather made a deliberate, carefully discussed group choice to do what they had to to survive. But who ever said otherwise? In fact, the movie goes weirdly overboard in its lionization of every last passenger. It's like Oprah handing out medals for saintliness. You're a saint! You're a saint! And you're a saint! You're all saints! There are no villains, no selfish people, nothing to add interest or dramatic friction except for the frigid wasteland. But Nature makes for a pretty boring antagonist. Who knew plane crashes and cannibalism could be so pointless and tedious? Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/08/24 Full Review Daniel T It has a very special athmosphere. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/21/24 Full Review Kevin M For the third time a film is made about the 1972 Uruguayan flight that crashed in the Andes, leading survivors to cannibalize their deceased fellow passengers to survive for 72 days before being rescued. I have not seen the first two attempts, but according to Rotten Tomatoes they weren’t good. They got it right this time because this one is thrilling. As I was watching it, I kept feeling like, enough already! How much can someone take? What they had to do to survive is absolutely incredible, not the least of which being a trek across the Andes mountains in ordinary clothes. Director J.A. Bayona does a masterful job of portraying the unbreakable will to survive against all odds. Get’s my pick for Best International Feature Film.
