Whelan Barzey Time Out If anything, Soul is guilty of over-ambition. The wizardry and wit are there, but it lacks Pixar’s usual deftness in making complex themes sing for youngsters. Rated: 3/5 Jul 25, 2023 Full Review Stephen Romei The Australian What follows is an absolute delight. It will make any viewer cherish the life they have and want to live it more fully, every single day, ideally with lots of laughs along the way. Rated: 4/5 Feb 13, 2021 Full Review Kambole Campbell Hyperallergic It shortchanges itself at every turn by overextending itself. Feb 8, 2021 Full Review Gautam Sunder The Hindu The studio’s first feature to frontline black characters is a stunning work of animation, with an important message to kids and adults alike. Jul 18, 2024 Full Review Amy Smith InSession Film There are speeches within this film that I will take away for the rest of my life, that is how impactful this film is. Mar 1, 2024 Full Review Diego Batlle Otroscines.com While it's true that some themes such as "the meaning of life" could be inaccessible to younger viewers, Soul is also understood and works on a more basic level. Austin S Brilliant animation and good message Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/21/24 Full Review Émile L Best movie on earth with a great message behind it Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/21/24 Full Review Dale R A Pixar release about a jazz musician turned middle school band director that ends up exploring the after, and before, life. Once again Pixar showed wonderful improvement in their animation. The background to the middle school that Joe works in is spot on. Being a band director myself, I also appreciated the nods to our profession’s daily life. The animation for the playing of the instruments is also spot on. Trombone slide movement, saxophone key presses, piano hand placement are all correct. My only real complaint regarding that is that a middle school trombone student had the slide technique and tone of a professional player, that would be a bit unrealistic. The depiction of the afterlife and before life were visually interesting and well adapted into the story. The ending for me did not work. (Spoilers) Joe’s growth as a character needed for us to see him living his life instead of just saying he was going to. Plus, we needed a credit scene with Joe being close to retirement and 22 entering his classroom. That would have been the cherry on top. (end spoilers) Jamie Foxx does a great job as Joe. Tina Fey also does well, but I could have used more humor from her character. Overall a good film that I think is worth your time. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Rory M I love this film, I love it animation, I love the score, I love the story and I love its themes and message. Although it did give my 7 year old an existential crisis. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/25/24 Full Review Audience Member One of my favourite pixar movies of the last years! Very heartwarming and inspiring. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/24/24 Full Review Jack N Probably the best recent-ish Disney-Pixar film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/23/24 Full Review Read all reviews
