What to Know

Critics Consensus

Spaceman's poignant themes are partly brought to life by sensitive performances from a talented cast, but it fails to consistently engage with its most interesting ideas.

Audience Says

Spaceman definitely isn't for everybody, but it does a decent job of adapting a slow, cerebral story that's easier to engage with in print.

Robert Levin Newsday No matter how much Sandler makes the audience feel for Jakub, it can be hard to sustain an entire picture with nothing more than overarching sadness. And “Spaceman” never finds another register. Rated: 2/4 Apr 8, 2024 Full Review Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's a little too slow and a little too philosophical. Mar 23, 2024 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) Spaceman is ultimately Sandler’s show but it’s one astronaut movie that ultimately seems very short on rocket fuel. Rated: 2/5 Mar 7, 2024 Full Review Billie Melissa Men's Journal In a generation expected to do so much more with a whole lot less, Spaceman gently nudges us in the direction of holding onto the tangible and wills us to stop yearning for life to begin when days are already ticking by. Jul 9, 2024 Full Review Joonatan Itkonen Toisto.net By the end, I didn’t question the logic of the narrative. But I felt genuinely moved, like something inside me had shifted without noticing. That alone is worth the trip. Rated: 4/5 Jul 3, 2024 Full Review Kayla McCulloch Metro Times (Detroit, MI) Perhaps Sandler’s intention in playing Jakob was to have an excuse to beef up the portfolio with something more reserved than anything we’ve gotten from him before. Zach B An absolute masterpiece. I held off on watching this because of the reviews, only to find a deeply philosphical, spiritual analysis of the human condition. Incredible. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/22/24 Full Review Oliver S Ignore the critics. Slow in the first half but second half is extremely beautiful. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/21/24 Full Review Al D Ignore the critics. Its a bit slow at times but the second half captures you. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/21/24 Full Review Audience Member Leave your expectations at home, take off into the emptiness of space and let the movie speak for itself. As others commented, there's sadness and loneliness, and yes, there is, but it serves a purpose. Very emotional. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/20/24 Full Review Audience Member For four years, a mysterious dust cloud has been enveloping Venus, and scientists couldn't wait to study it. To get samples for analysis, astronaut Jakub was chosen, who went on a journey. Although for the others it was a scientific expedition, for Jacob it became a journey inside himself. Left alone, he concentrated on his thoughts. Loneliness made him think about the life decisions he had made, the correctness of his attitude towards his loved ones and the reasons for his loneliness. Despite his worries, he still had a mission, and he wasn't ready to give it up out of fear. He might not come back, at least not the way he was before. This film is developing slowly, but it does not need dynamics to reveal the story. Thanks to the wonderful shots and musical accompaniment, the film leaves an incredible impression. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/16/24 Full Review Audience Member Defies logic. 20mins in we find our lone space traveller unraveling. Is his companion real? Apparently so, and yet no procedures are followed. Contact with ET? Finding out their method or ingress, origin, composition, intention, reporting findings etc? Aside from the obvious ridiculousness, would he ever have been sent into space if Sandler couldn't handle the alone time or if his marriage was on the rocks? Utter nonsense.
