Critics Consensus

As harrowing as it is humane, The Settlers serves as a sharp-edged excavation of long-marginalized history.

Tara Brady Irish Times The writer-director and his cinematographer, Simone D’Arcangelo, evoke spaghetti westerns with wide-angle vistas of forbidding horizons. Odd moments of Quentin Tarantino-style playfulness add to the unease. Rated: 4/5 Feb 24, 2024 Full Review Jonathan Romney Financial Times At its strongest, though, The Settlers is unsettling indeed, not least thanks to the complementary performances of Arancibia, British TV regular Stanley, and Alfredo Castro... Rated: 3/5 Feb 8, 2024 Full Review David Jenkins Little White Lies Lacks for a dramatic centre, but all the constituent parts are worthwhile. Rated: 3/5 Feb 8, 2024 Full Review Heidy Morales Hye's Musings 'The Settlers'... challenges what we are taught (and not taught) in history books. It is asking us to question said history and to acknowlege that all colonies were established through violence and genocide. Jun 4, 2024 Full Review Filipe Freitas Always Good Movies Evokes the spirit of classic westerns, here infused with shades of Herzog and Jodorowsky’s filmmaking styles. Rated: 3.5/5 Apr 18, 2024 Full Review Petr Navovy Pajiba Its relatively brief running time and patient pace combined with spare, subtle character work give it the feel of a parable or folk tale, even as it confronts the horrors of imperial subjugation with, at times, nearly unbearably frank realism. Kevin L Rehasing tired events of man's utter disgust for and lack of any respect or concern for any group seen as beneath or 'primitive' to them. Nothing original or fresh about it, so I'm not sure about the overwhelming positive reviews from critics. Maybe I've just seen enough of these now that they leave me numb or indifferent. The performances are fine, but none of them really grabbed me. Stanley's lieutenant was the right mode for murderous limey bigot. Arancibia the right tone for traitorous butcher. There had to be the eventual scene where the evil kingpin has the secret talk in the dark to be 'real' about what he believed and what he had done; and would continue to have done. But, it was more than competently put together. Director/writer Felipe Gálvez and co-author Girarid spin a good tale that no doubt has a real trail of bloody history in Chile, Argentina and elsewhere on the continent. Cinematography stood out. The miles wide fields and mighty Andes are a regal sight. The close-ups of the ever dirtier, darker faces added to the tone. And the stark looked very stark. 3 stars Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/04/24 Full Review Les N I wasn't paying enough attention Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/02/24 Full Review Laura C Hard to watch but important to see and understand this history. Beautifully filmed. Man's inhumanity to man continues to astound. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/22/24 Full Review Vicente C An absolute banger of a western. Not only entertaining, but also deeply thought-provoking and thoroughly disturbing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/07/24 Full Review Stephen H The film was beautiful to look at and was well acted, but I just couldn't pick out any real theme or message from it. The tension and violence just seemed to lead to... nothing.
