BUTTE, Mont.- The Frontier Conference season officially got underway on Friday, as the Bears of Rocky Mountain College visited the Mining City to take on the Orediggers of Montana Tech.
The two programs met three times a year ago, and all three matches went the way of the Orediggers. The Bears broke that trend and got a big win on the road in Butte, 3-1 (25-16, 22-25,25-22,25-17) to kick off the conference season.
The tale of the tape was consistency.
Rocky was incredibly consistent the entire night, with 16 attack errors, and five service errors, they just didn't give Montana Tech many easy points.
When the Orediggers were "ON" they were fantastic, but their consistency wasn't at the same level, with 28 attack errors, and 12 service errors.
Freshman
Piper Jette led the Orediggers with 15 kills, Senior
Megan Benton had a fantastic night tallying 14 kills on 27 swings, and hitting .370. Fellow senior Olivia Labeau hit .450 on the night to finish with 11 kills for Montana Tech. Labeau also led the Diggs with 6 total blocks.
Sophomore setter
Rhys Layton put up 45 assists in the match.
On the night the Orediggers hit .163 as a team, the Bears finished with a .224 hitting percentage.
Rocky Mountain College (9-3, 1-0) had two players finish with double-digit kills, Kaitlyn Wood and Makenna Bushman, both accounting for 12. Bushman was also responsible for eight blocks on the night. The eight blocks was not the high water mark, as Gabriella Panzetta finished with 11 total blocks.
Montana Tech (6-5, 0-1) will go on the road next week, with matches in Havre on Thursday against the Skylights, and then at Carroll on Saturday.
