Child Loss of Dependent Status

When a child loses dependent eligibility, the child must be dropped from medical and dental coverage. The child is no longer eligible for child life.

When a child turns age 26 or a grandchild turns age 25, they are automatically dropped from your coverage and you need take no action. The child will be mailed an offer of COBRA to the address listed on file.

Medical and Dental.

• You cannot change your medical or dental plan administrator.
• The child will be offered COBRA if notification of loss of eligibility is made within 60 days of the loss of eligibility.

Life insurance.

• If you carried child life insurance, and this is the last insurance eligible child you have, you must cancel the coverage by completing an Optional Coverage application.
• If you have other covered children, you do not have to make any changes to your child life coverage.
• You may contact Securian Financial (Minnesota Life) for conversion.

Pre-tax accounts

You may reduce your Medical Dental Expense Account (MDEA) and/or your Dependent Care Expense Account (DCEA) by completing and returning to SEGIP the Change in Participation form.

Medical and Dental

• Your Qualifying Status Change form (Formerly - Application to Change Insurance Coverage) for medical and dental insurance must be submitted within 60 days of your dependent losing eligibility.
• The child will be offered COBRA if notification of loss of eligibility is made within 60 days of the loss of eligibility including the date of the event.

Life Insurance

• You must contact Securian Financial (Minnesota Life) within 30 days of the life event including the date of the event to apply for conversion of child life insurance.

Pre-tax Accounts

• Reductions to pre-tax accounts (MDEA and DCEA) must be submitted within 30 days of the life event including the date of the event.

Timing is everything

• An enrollment is completed by submitting the required forms to the SEGIP office no later than the last day of the enrollment period.
• Do not delay submitting your application by the deadline. Call SEGIP at 651-355-0100 within your enrollment period when there is a delay obtaining documents. Otherwise, late applications will not be processed.
• If the enrollment is not completed within the allowed period, your next opportunity to change your coverage is during the next annual Open Enrollment or upon another qualified life event.

• The child will be dropped from medical and dental insurance on the last day of the month in which your child turns 26 or grandchild turns 25 or otherwise loses eligibility.
• Reductions to MDEA and DCEA pre-tax accounts will take effect on the event date or the first day of the pay period in which SEGIP receives your completed form, whichever comes later.
