Tornado Confirmed In Joliet, Crest Hill

A tornado also touched down Saturday morning in Naperville. More severe weather could hit Saturday night.

JOLIET, IL — The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado touched down in Joliet and Crest Hill early Saturday morning.

NWS said the tornado, an EF-0 — or the lowest on the scale — touched down in Crest Hill and then tracked south into Joliet before lifting.

Its peak winds were estimated at 70 mph.

A separate tornado that touched down in Naperville was also rated an EF-0. Naperville officials said that tornado touched down at 5:41 a.m.

"No injuries or residential structural damage have been reported; however, isolated reports of storm damage, mainly damaged trees, have been made throughout south Naperville," the city said. "The majority of the damage was reported along the Route 59 corridor from approximately White Eagle Drive south past Hassert Boulevard. This includes tree damage as well as roof damage to and multiple gas leaks within a commercial building near the intersection of Route 59 and 95th Street."

There are no additional gas leaks as of Saturday evening.

A dozen roads were blocked by fallen trees or limbs, and the storm also caused minor flooding, the City of Naperville said.

NWS said it is working on finalizing its damage survey and expects to release additional information.

More severe weather could move into the Chicago area between 7 p.m. and midnight, NWS said.

Torrential rain could cause flooding, especially in areas that received heavy rain Friday night. Drivers should avoid flooded roads.
