Sea of Tranquility

Sea of Tranquility is told in shifting timelines with different characters. In the timeline with Mirella, there are a bunch of different characters introduced in a relatively short period of time. To add to the confusion of this, there is a character named Vincent. However, Vincent is a female. I kept reading the passage over and over, not understanding what I was missing because I thought “she” must be referring to someone else.
The first 40% of this book was slow. However, by the 60% mark, I couldn’t put the book down. There were also some interesting concepts discussed.
The ending was not all that I wanted it to be. I still had questions. Three questions to be specific which I won’t post here because I don’t want to spoil this book for anyone. But if you want to know, feel free to DM me.
Overall, a solid fantasy book that took a little bit of time to warm up, and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Glad, Lisa, that it was worth hanging in and finishing.

I’ll be reading this one soon. I didn’t like Station Eleven but loved the Glass Hotel so I’m anxious to see what I think.
Hope you enjoy this one, Jan! I haven't read any other works by this author so I didn't have any expectations, but I will keep my eye out for your review to see what you think!
Thanks, Catherine! This was my first work by Mendel. It might have been easier for me to read this if I read her other works first. There were so many different characters, new characters for every time period. Not only new characters but entirely new sets of characters! There were several times I was like, "And who is that again?"
Was there a reason why a female character was given a boy's name, Lisa?
Confusing, to say the least.
Excellent review!

Excellent review!
I am curious about your questions and in case anyone else hasn’t read Mandel’s The Glass Hotel already, that would help with some of the characters in this book immensely.
Thanks for the review. I would suggest reading The Glass Hotel by the same author and then you will understand Vincent better😊. She does take a while to get the reader warmed up, but does manage to keep the reader captivated!
Yeah the author definitely did not account for the fact that people who have not read The Glass Hotel would not immediately realize Vincent is a girl. I am curious about what your questions were so I'll DM you :)
Vincent, her brother Paul and Mirella were all characters from the authors previous novel 'the glass hotel'. Shame that this book gives away most of the plot already of you wanted to read it afterwards
Good review. I felt the same about the ending and wanted a bit more of an answer to the central question.
You might consider skipping The Da Vinci Code—the contrast in quality with the others is just too hideous.
The time period with Mirella and Vincent functions as a bit of a sequel to her previous book, The Glass Hotel. I can see how it's confusing if you haven't read that one, but if you have, it will be pretty clear.
Had you read the 3 books in proper order you wouldn't be confused. Or maybe you would be just because. But I read them in order and they all made sense.
It took me a while to embrace fantasy, but when I started to list out my favorite books and authors, I noticed that there was more and more fantasy until I couldn't deny it anymore.....
The name for Vincent was confusing to me as well, however the author did state when she was introduced that Vincent is a female and notes how strange that is.
I'm so glad I found this review, I was about to quit in only chapter 2, but I'll keep going and see if it sorts itself out.
I'm taking notes, SO many notes :/

It did take some effort to keep track of the 4 different timelines and characters of the first 4 chapters. Somewhere in the 3rd chapter I recognized that Gaspery was involved in all the story lines, and things started becoming clearer. This experience was similar with Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities”; it was worth the effort of keeping different storylines in mind because they all start coming together.
You were confused by a name so much you had to read a passage over and over? It's really not that difficult. Names don't have genders.
Vincent is a character from her previous work “The Glass Hotel.” Her brother Paul Smith is also in that novel.
Your March, April and November reads are among my favorite reads. I need to tackle this one, having read “The Glass Hotel.”
I like the title of this book so much that I’m going to change my name and profile picture in honor of Space Exploration
I agree with most of your review. I thought the first half of the book was so slow-moving, I stopped reading (actually, listening on Audible) for awhile, and then I couldn’t really remember what was happening. I tried to refresh my memory by reading some summaries, but they gave away plot points I hadn’t yet reached. I thought the ending was underwhelming, too (maybe because I’d found out too much). I’m interested in your 3 questions!
