First time at this restaurant. I've heard so many good reviews that I'm glad to have finally stopped by.
The restaurant is busy despite the size. The tables are close to each other and the turnover is fast. Service is prompt and the servers are friendly.
Tried the bun cha ca dac biet. The soup was very flavoursome with a touch of sweetness to it. A good hearty bowl on a cold day that is very satisfying. The protein to noodle ratio is good and they don't skimp on the herbs, bean sprouts and Birds Eye chilli.
Will definitely be back.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0May 14, 2017Previous reviewHad the bun rieu (crab paste) and unfortunately it was a miss. It was very bland despite adding chilli, bean sprouts, greens etc.
There was no depth in terms of taste for the broth and no crab or seafood flavours.
I ordered a small and a side of grilled lemongrass chicken (which also tasted pretty average) for an extra $3.50. Decent size and good value. There is a combo deal with the soups if you order spring rolls, coffee etc.
This place is super tiny. Service is very slow for both food and table clearing. At 7.30pm on a Saturday night, they had to turn people away as they were closed. Bizarre hours, no?
Those who were already seated, were told that they had run out of rice, so there's only soup or soup.
The other issue I had was that they had to leave the door open the entire time due to the amount of people lining up so a very cold draft was blowing through the restaurant. We were seated near the door, making this experience a very unpleasant one.
Maybe better luck next visit. - Ida T.Steveston, Richmond, Canada371Aug 18, 2024
I had the crab something pho tonight. All I could taste was salt. Too salty!!!
However, I love the huge plate of vegetables and herbs that accompanied it. Texture contrast was spot on.
My focus was the soup and overall taste. I would rate it 2.5 stars.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Aug 11, 2024
Recommended by a friend who has never steered us wrong, we quite enjoyed this restaurant.
I ordered the pho raw beef with beef balls (#9) and combination rice with lemongrass pork chop, lemongrass chicken, and fried egg (#48). Each dish was roughly $19-20, but plenty of food: me and my two kids couldn't finish these two dishes.
The pho was great, but I found the broth to be a bit light for my liking. Kids gobbled it up. Raw beef was quite lean, but tasty. And the noodles were perfect with the ample bean sprouts provided.
The com rice combo was great: favourite was the lemongrass chicken, so I'll probably only get that next time. The pork chop was flavourful as well, and fried egg as you'd expect in such a dish. I expected the rice to have more flavour--like maybe some kind of sauce drizzled over it--but it just had a tiny bit of scallion oil.
All said, the meal was good value for today's prices, and I would consider coming back again. Service was no-nonsense and efficient, but polite. The one thing I had to dock for was: I went to the washroom after eating and asked my daughter to get the check, and when I came back, I found they had kicked us off the table to seat someone else. Felt like they could've waited the one minute instead of booting two girls off ...
You do have to line up outside and simply wait your turn. It's always 10-15 people deep, but the line moves quickly so it's only maybe 5-8 minutes wait usually.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jul 16, 20242 check-ins
Came here twice this month!! I'm not particularly the biggest fan, but my mom loves this place whenever we go for Vietnamese food because she claims it's the only place with broth that doesn't make her thirsty when she gets home.
Their portions are quite big and everything is always flavourful and on point. I enjoy their rice dishes a lot here! I always opt for number 41.
As for their noodles, their special includes a variety of beef and that's always a go-to as well! (#7!!)
We got a vermicelli bowl here for the first time and it was just okay! Lots of noodles but it was a little dry. It also would've been easier to eat if it was in a bowl instead of a plate. The shrimp were quite small and burnt. There was also sadly a piece of hair in it. Next time, we'll try the patty instead of the shrimp.
Service isn't bad, but nor is it good (especially if you're nor Vietnamese! They do their jobs and get the food to you as soon as they can.
It's cash only, so make sure you bring enough!!
It's always busy, but people usually eat and go pretty quickly. There's enough seating! They also have two rooms in the back I believe.. which I personally like as it's not so loud. The only downfall is that it may take them longer to service you.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jun 1, 2024
The crab noodles soup was amazing - springy rice noodles drenched in a savoury crab broth and topped with a generous portion of meats, cuttlefish fish and prawns. Add some fresh bean sprouts, lettuce and a squeeze of lemon to just make it perfect. Also had the fried chicken. Though it was tasty it seemed to miss that crunchy and "special seasoning" from That Other Cambodian restaurant.
Service was fast and curt. Ethnic background music was loud to cover up the rather noisy toddlers that seem to fill half the place (Young parents, there is a difference between free spirit and running amok).
Despite the ear pains the food will draw me back!

Came here with my family and ordered the Bun Cha Ca Dac Biet and Deep Fried Squid.
The Bun Cha Ca Dac Biet was really good. They loaded it with great toppings! The cha ca itself was really good as well. It becomes tender in the soup and is perfect for my soft mouth. Same sentiments to the other seafood cakes. I substituted the bun for banh pho and they were able to accommodate perfectly! Very thankful as I don't like bun in soup. The soup is on the saltier side though, which I didn't like. Next time I'd like to try their pho as my brother said it was delicious!
The Deep Fried Squid was perfectly crisp, chewy, and flavourful. They put on the perfect amount of seasoning. Loved it.
There was a small wait coming in, but luckily my family had reservations. It's extremely busy here! The restaurant itself is nice and spacious with lots of seating.Helpful 2Thanks 2Love this 2Oh no 0 - Jun 29, 20242 check-ins
Very good place for noodle soups. They have lots of style of noodle soups like hieu teiu and pho. But They are known for their bun cha ca dac biet and bun rieu which what my family got. Their food were good and yummy. The place itself is modern and clean. This place can get very busy so if you go during their prime time lunch or dinner, it may be hard to get the worker to come to you. You may have to wait a little bit until they come to you before you can place your orders with the waiter. Other than that, I don't mind coming back here again whenever i visit vancouver again

Came by to try out their infamous crab pho and I was pleasantly surprised. There was a good amount of flavour, toppings and noodles in the bowl...enough for me to have left overs! We also ordered a rare beef pho and it was also generous on the portions of noodles and meat! We both felt pretty full and good after our meal but felt quite thirsty hours later from the broth.
Service was pretty quick and you pay at the counter when you're done your meal.
Highly recommend trying this spotHelpful 2Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - Feb 16, 2024
Stopped by mid week around 11 am. Seated at a table immediately...and no line ups. I like how open and clean this new location is. Ordered the pho with rare beef, beef balls and beef ribs. There were two large beef ribs in the pho...wow. The broth was great with the addition of a little chilli oil.
Will need to return to try their Bun Cha Ca as I understand that is what they are known for.
It was a very positive food experience and happy to recommend Bun Cha Ca Hoang Yen.Helpful 3Thanks 2Love this 3Oh no 0 - Mar 4, 2024
I'm glad to be back here after eating at their old location many years ago! I can definitely see the renovations and improvements. The sign at the front even has a thin waterfall against glass which is really nice to look at haha.
Upon entering on a busy Saturday evening for dinner, I lined up behind a few groups of people waiting. There's no name-taking; you just have to physically wait in line and use an honour system to see who is next in line to be seated. It's pretty efficient and fast anyway.
The server took our order very quickly and efficiently, which I really valued in my hungry state. I ordered a bun rieu, and my friends and I shared the chicken wings appetizer. The food came out lightning quick! I was so impressed, because it felt like 5 mins since they took our order, and then all our noodle soup dishes came out!
The bun rieu was tasty yet light. I liked the big shrimps and fried tofu pieces. I often make bun rieu myself at home actually, but this was a great, lighter option for me! The chicken wings were perfectly cooked, though I felt lacking in a bit of flavour. I still preferred Phnom Penh chicken wings in that regard.
Can't wait to keep coming back here! The quick service was very much appreciated.Helpful 2Thanks 2Love this 2Oh no 0
