An engaging & heartbreaking tale about the friendship between two young boys as they become Teens. Innocence and budding sexuality leads to confusion an unspoken rejection resulting in a terrible tragedy. The characters are genuine, the cinematography gorgeous and the story unbearable. Minimal dialog. Subtitled. A beautiful slowly unfolding foreign film leaving many unanswered questions at the end. Tissues required.
a devastating look into adolescent social status, friendship, and loss
Terribly sad, but not just for the obvious reasons. I’m not sure what the director intended, but I read the film as an allegory for a singular individual’s experience, told through two characters. The loss of part of one’s self will forever remain partially in memory, but it will never come back to life again.
An incredible film and one of the very best of the year, featuring some of the best cinematography of the year. Newcomers Eden Dambrine and Gustav De Waele give beautifully natural performances. Dambrine is a tour-de-fource and De Waele broke my heart. Émilie Dequenne is also great in her supporting turn. A shame she didn't get any awards attention. I didn't know this movie was going to go where it did. I only knew the basic storyline. It was an absolute gut-punch. I was in tears the majority of this film. Director Lukas Dhont is able to effectively establish a really beautiful friendship early on and in a relatively short period of time. As a viewer we are just as devastated by the loss of that friendship as if we had already watched an entire movie about these characters. This film is going to stay with me for a while. I drove a couple hours twice so I could see it a couple times.
A truly devastating story that implores you to fight back against ridiculous rules of intimacy we allow to exist through our inaction.
This film was not what I expected. However, it was one of the most powerful films I have seen recently. I was very glad I saw it.The acting by the young boys was outstanding
barely any dialogue of any characters, with that, the dramatic emotional scenes were not very well acted. especially by the child actors. not bad but it was boring and slow.
It was very well done but pretty sad. I was a bit surprised at how soon the tragedy happened in the film (no spoilers.) I expected it to happen towards the end. It changed the entire direction of the film.
Fabulous acting by all. Deep film with so many themes. Will be thinking about this for a long time.
The teens who played the lead roles were ultra convincing! Even with subtitles I almost didn't need to read them because the kids facial expressions and body language said it all.
Beautiful movie with tender treatment of adolescent feelings.
i feel like everyone can relate to this movie
A moving and beautiful story about friendship, intimacy then loss of innocence, masculinity, and grief
This has got to be one of my favorite movies now. Didn't really know what to expect but definitely was a movie that hit home. I've never cried so many tears at the theaters I kinda wish I could've watch it at home to curl up in a ball and cry in my own pit of sadness. Whoever the director is I hate you for making me depressed lol
Sensitive, emotional telling of a story of youth. Expertly crafted.
A riveting masterpiece with deep insight, including showing the harm that comes from homophobia.
This is a high quality film expressing real feelings rather than sentimental sap that is often in today's films especially for the elderly. It was told in a slow and careful way ending on a positive note. The behaviors were real and it brought the audience along with it as we were begging for the relief of guilt the young boy felt.
You think you’re about to watch a film about the tragic transformation boys go through with their best friends as they reach the age where puberty happens, but then you’re held hostage by an hour and a half of people crying. I strongly disliked this movie.
Heart warming and touching movie
Beautifully filmed. Touching story. Well directed.
