Professionals for DHH Families: Conclusion Transcript

[Title slide appears with the following text: “For Professionals Working with Families with DHH Children: Language and Literacy Strategies Conclusion (State of Minnesota logo) Minnesota Department of Health, Minnesota Commission of the Deaf, DeafBlind & Hard of Hearing”]

[Leala Holcomb appears and begins to sign.]

>> Leala: You’ve already discussed six different strategies used to promote language and literacy. Those six strategies are virtual to promote language and literacy development. These are not the only strategies available to use -  there are many more that we have not covered here. I encourage you, as a professional, to use the same approaches to use with the families by discussing them, modeling the strategies, and give ample opportunities to practice what they have learned. You can use the family videos as a guide to aid you in your discussions with the families about the importance of having deaf role models. The importance of having characters who are deaf involved in books and movies. The importance of having deaf peers and friends. The importance of continued exposing the child to language and literacy on their road to success in life.  Remind the families that they are not alone on their journey of raising a deaf child, that they have a community at their disposal such as local organizations and service agencies that can support them. You play a vital role in the lives of the families and their children. Thank you for your work.
