A person wakes up on a table and can't see. They can't remember...anything. For most of the rest of the book, a voice from another room instructs them in activities that will hopefully bring their mind and body to a state of health. The first few pages were interesting but I ended up thinking that it was ultimately kind of long and drawn out for what seemed to me to be a pretty foreseeable ending.

So, the premise is cool and the first half of the story really gives you a lot of food for thought. If you could choose your unborn child's temperament using genetic "nudging", would you? A fertility clinic gives a man the opportunity to see three different versions of what his son's life will be like using statistical probability based on what personality attributes they can bring to the forefront. Would you want your child to be content and stable if it meant they never lived up to their true potential? Would you choose a path that had creativity and passion if it also meant addiction and chaos? Would you pick a life where charm and charisma meant skating through life as an asshole until life invariably teaches them a hard lesson? You gotta think about that for a minute, right?

Because you're not just trying to weed out diseases or decide on an eye color. You're plotting out a roadmap for their life, and not in the hopeful let's make sure they go to a good school sort of way. No, you've gone whole hog in a manipulatively invasive way. Oh, wow! That's something to chew on.

Then it veered off the rails and went in a whole new direction when he left the clinic to mull things over. Without giving any spoilers, I'll put it like this: Pretend you're sitting at a bar and you strike up a conversation about {insert SPORT here} that's playing on the television. Then suddenly, this other guy starts ranting about the ice wall around the flat earth and how 5G cellphone towers have been installed by the government to send out mind control signals. It's not where you thought your night was headed when you casually mentioned that you were pulling for the college basketball team on the television.

The bartender gives him some sob story about having triplets after their first child, causing him and his wife to have to re-arrange their priorities (this equals being poor), then tells him about his one smart daughter and 3 not-as-smart sons and all the sacrifices they made for her to get into the best college, only to be told by her doctor that they all needed to sit down and talk because ISSUES, and the whole family saw a therapist and the kids all talked about their childhood, and it was just the most specialist thing ever. Then the bartender and another patron proceed to tell him that they think the military is funding the clinic to make super-soldiers. Yes. Seriously. So Sam gets in his self-driving car and rides back to the clinic and snags his sperm. He hops back in his car, goes to the pub, and slaps his container full of spooge down on the bar. I'm taking my DNA back, baby! The three guys eyeball his jar of goo as the story fades to black... (hide spoiler)] I get it, but that whole last bit ruined the initial what if coolness of the first part of the story for me. It overexplained things in a way that took the fizzle out of it.

Very cute. So the gist is that (sometime in the future) a bunch of the 1 percenters got on a spaceship as the Earth was hitting a crisis point in the eVery cute. A "better" version. One where they don't have to deal with peasants. Now they've sent back someone in the servant class to retrieve some kind of resource that they need, with the promise that he'll get this perfect skin as a reward. That part was very hard for me to visualize, but whatever. Basically, he'll get to be blond with a big dick. Earth was dying when they left, so all he's got to do is navigate this barren planet and get the goods. But he is in for the surprise of a lifetime.

And they're happy in their ecologically sound cities, where everyone has everything they need to live and no one is forgotten or abandoned. They even get paid if they don't work! Inside his mind, he's got this chip with basically a downloaded version of the new world leaders' consciousness that's constantly talking to him and telling him what to do, how to do it, giving out information (that's a sunset, that's a tree, that's a woman, etc.), while informing him how gross it is on Earth when compared with the perfection they've created on their planet.

At the end, our unnamed astronaut has to decide what he wants to do with this information.
Unfortunately, I'm not rich. And I've met my peers. Some are wonderful, some are horrid. Greed and callousness aren't character traits relegated only to the wealthy. So, while it's a lovely idea to say that if only we could get rid of the people in charge, the borders would come down and we would all peacefully work toward finding solutions that would benefit mankind as a global unit, I'm afraid that's just not so. What would realistically happen if they all disappeared is that their Great Value counterparts would step in to take their place. We'd still have wars, we'd still have genocide, we'd still have people that lacked basic necessities. It doesn't mean it's useless to try to make the world a better place, it just means that there's no such thing as a quick fix. (hide spoiler)] But this is fiction and I liked the story. The stories make sense when you step back and look at them through a historical lens, and I've been looking for a lecture that covered it this way for quite some time.

Her love of the history of the Old Testament is evident in the way she explains the stories behind the stories in the Bible. You can tell she's very aware that she is dealing with a religious text that means a great deal to people around the world and is respectful of that, while still giving a secular lecture about the origins of the scriptures.

She not only goes into the history of the Bible but also goes into the history of the scholars throughout the ages who have tried to figure out the origins of the stories in the Bible. For example, the Documentary Hypothesis is something that anyone who has looked into this subject will have heard a lot about, and she does an excellent job explaining what it is, how it came about, and why it is generally thought of as flawed in some ways.

The little oddities in translation that gave us stories like Joseph's coat of many colors, instead of a long-sleeved tunic, is just one of the ways that the text has changed and morphed and become something for new generations of readers. Regardless of how it came to be, it has become part of our own lore and new authors have taken the core story and made it into something present-day people find recognizable and perhaps relatable.

I was particularly interested in the origins of the Septuagint, having just listened to a lecture on ancient Egypt. I didn't realize that it was so different from the Masoretic Text that is (mostly) used in English translations of the Christian Bible. Very cool.

I found the parts about King Josiah far more interesting than I originally anticipated. The idea that the written word was possibly considered sketchy at first was a new concept to me. The prophet Jeremiah seems to be saying that perhaps the word of God should not be written down but only spoken through prophets like himself. This might have been a reflection of a turning point when the oral traditions were starting to become written traditions. Jeremiah 8:8 New Revised Standard Version How can you say, “We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us,” when, in fact, the false pen of the scribes has made it into a lie?

The skinny gist is that a spaceship is sent from Earth to start life on a new planet. Its programming allows it to become sentient and the reader follows its incredibly boring journey through the stars - for about an hour if you've got the audiobook.

There's not much to say because not much happens unless you're interested in the benign inner ramblings of a spacecraft. It's part of The Far Reaches series and was (at the time I am writing this) a freebie on Audible if you have a subscription.

I absolutely can not stand it when people "correctly" pronounce words from another language as if they are speaking in that language. I get it. I know how to correctly pronounce croissant in French, but only a pretentious asshole has to bust out the French accent when ordering something in an American restaurant. And this guy! It was seemingly impossible for him to make it through even a few sentences without pulling out obnoxious accents for everything. At some point in the lecture, I just wondered what kind of a nightmare he must be in real life. At a party, I would imagine he must be on par with guitar man & magic trick guy. And don't pop up on my thread with your "well, aaaaaactually..." bullshit. It's annoying. And if you don't think it's annoying, then I can promise you that you are the person at the party that people are actively avoiding.

Ok. Beyond that? It was alright. There was an undercurrent of Jack-of -all-trades-master-of-none to Isbouts. Like he was a celebrity Bible writer? I don't know how else to explain it, but as interesting as his opinions were, I'm not exactly sold on this guy being the real deal. It's just a feeling and I have ZERO facts to back that statement up. So. Isbouts takes you on a tour of the entire Bible, starting in Genesis, and tries to show how each book was a product of the time it was written in. Not only that, but how the oral traditions of the surrounding civilizations worked their way into the lore of the stories. He is of the opinion that a lot of the characters in the Jewish tales were more than likely cobbled together out of both reality and legend. He's a Christian, but not a literalist. This means he's trying to find a way to ground myth with archaeology and meld it into a spiritual thing. Bottom line, don't go into this thinking he's out there digging around for Noah's Ark. You will be sorely disappointed, if so.
When he got to the New Testament stuff you can see he really buys into the Gospel stories as for-real things that happened. I was a tad shocked that he thought Jesus healed with some sort of "energy" by laying hands on people, and casually mentioned that energy healers are a thing today that help a lot of people. Well. Ok, then. That's one idea. I'm not saying it isn't possible, just that I'm not used to hearing this sort of stuff in Great Course lectures. Another thing I'm not used to hearing is what historical figures "must have thought" in relation to ancient texts. One phrase that caught my attention was, "I can only imagine poor Mary and Martha cooking up a storm for their large group of guests who they obviously expect to return..." while talking about Jesus losing his temper in the temple, getting trapped in the city by guards looking for him, and Isbouts saying this is why he thinks the Last Supper took place in a rented room. None of this is something I would expect from a historian, in that nothing about his story is provable in a historical sense. It smacked of what he wanted to believe and what made a great story. It would, however, be lovely coming from a pulpit on Sunday morning.

Overall, I thought this was a cool trip through the Bible that included what may (I stress may because I have serious doubts about Isbouts) have been going on in the ancient world at around the same times that these stories were being told. If you're just looking for an overall view of what happened and when, then you should probably get a kick out of this one.

Come to terms with my past, try to understand why I ended up on such a different path than the one I started out on, and accept who I am now without becoming bitter. The more I try to learn, the less angry I become because curiosity takes over, and dammit, I can't help but be enthralled by our collective world history.

Well, it's your fault that you've let me ramble on this far without skipping past. But I will spoiler-tag it because I'm not a total monster and this is basically just a free therapy session for myself.

(view spoiler)[ As I listened to Jean-Pierre Isbouts talk about how physicists are saying that there might be some "energy" that created the universe, that the Bible talks about water and scientists think we evolved from the water, etc., etc., etc., I had an epiphany about necessary lies. I think we all tell ourselves lies and then we force ourselves to believe them. And that's not even a bad thing. I think there are times we absolutely need to lie to ourselves. When my youngest daughter had leukemia, it was a long process of treatments that lasted several years, followed by one nail-biting test after another once she stopped treatment. And for those of you who have ever been in a situation like that, you know that you live day-to-day in a type of surreal survival mode. Now, during that time, I had a mantra that I repeated to myself - I will not lose a kid today. As though I could stand guard at an invisible gate and keep her alive through the sheer force of my will. That is not how reality works. I knew that, but I bought into that lie with every bit of my crusty heart. Because I had to. I would have collapsed under the mental strain and wouldn't have been able to function as a caregiver if I had let my fear and anxiety over this wildly out of my control situation take hold of my mind. So. That was the epiphany. The vast majority of people need the exact same thing I did, which is to buy into a necessary lie that allows them to continue on in a world that will always spin out of our control. I shouldn't be angry, or confused, or disappointed if they don't want to shine a light on their own version of the thing that gets them through the day. I get it. I nearly chewed my well-meaning husband's head off when he told me I might need to prepare myself for...a not-good scenario. You need to hold on to something that defies logic sometimes. And if that thing is belief in a God or gods or whatever, then I think I can get behind that a bit better than anything else. So maybe this will help me in my personal journey to understand the religious people in my life. (hide spoiler)]

This was probably the best explanation I've read so far of the similarities and differences of the Synoptic Gospels (Mark, Matthew, & Luke), and why John is so different from the other three. The Gospel of John (along with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd John) is attributed to the Johannine community of Christians who seemingly followed the teaching of the (unnamed) beloved disciple or the disciple whom Jesus loved. This might explain why Peter is noticeably lower on the totem pole in this one.

The section on the Pastoral epistles (1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus) was also very illuminating in that it explained the difference in time periods of the church as the reason the tone is not like that of the Pauline epistles. In the beginning of the church, you had Paul writing letters to groups of believers with the expectation that Jesus was coming back within the next little bit. There was no need for any real organization because the belief was that,“Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” New International Version Matthew 16:28 But by the time the writer of the Pastoral epistles came along, it was evident that this wasn't the case, and by sometime in the 2nd century there was a real need for some kind of organized hierarchy in the church to combat heresy.

The letters of Paul are also always interesting. And over the years I've really grown to appreciate how maligned the poor guy has been due to some of the things attributed to him, mostly due to the Pastoral epistles. The statements that have garnered the most ire from feminists over the years don't seem to have anything to do with what he actually taught. In fact, he seemed to be quite progressive in that, while he did think women should cover their heads in church, he was fine with them holding leadership positions alongside the men.

All of this is, of course, up for debate. But I think David Brakke did an excellent job showing why a lot of critical scholars have come to these conclusions. I've listened to a couple of his other lectures (Gnosticism: From Nag Hammadi to the Gospel of Judas & The Apocryphal Jesus) and I really enjoy how thorough he is while still being accessible to the listener.

When our down-on-their-luck "hero" finds himself at a crossroads in his life, the death of his mother's brother (a billionaire he doesn't know) isn't anything but a blip on the news. Until that is, his uncle's personal assistant comes to him with a favor. A favor that then turns into him inheriting the world's largest corporation of evil. For someone whose dream is to own the local pub and be a good cat dad, getting thrown into the deep end with a bunch of hardened evildoers isn't exactly ideal.

Cute story. And it answered all the pressing questions about villains from my childhood such as, why do the evildoers sit around stroking their cats menacingly, what's up with volcano lairs, and would it be a good idea to unionize genetically modified dolphins? All it needed was a map showing the location of all that damn quicksand that was supposedly just waiting to suck me under, and I could die happy.

But I'm not going to lie, the cats made it 100xs better for me. We have 4 cats (aren't they adorable?) so that just lets you know I'm definitely CERTIFIABLE the target audience for this book.

It's a very tongue-in-cheek kind of story, so it's maybe not going to hit with everyone, but if you're a Scalzi fan already then you'll more than likely enjoy this one quite a bit.

Did you know that Ramesses the Great's mummy was growing fungi due to the initial neglect? Nobody thought of the mummies as a treasure at first and just sort of stuffed them in the back rooms of museums. The two easiest ways to get rid of the fungi would have been to freeze it or heat it up, but they couldn't do that because it would have damaged the mummy. So to save him, they used gamma radiation. YES. And that, kids, is the true story of how Ramesses the Great became The Incredible Hulk.

Did you know the Egyptians never lost a battle? Ok, not really. But they were big believers in writing, re-writing (re-chiseling?), and leaving out anything they didn't feel made them look good when it came to their own history. I'm thinking that's something that I need to do when I write my (much anticipated) autobiography.

The bottom line was I really enjoyed the way Bob Brier taught this subject. He's enthusiastic about Egyptology and lets you know up front that his goal isn't to cover everything but to spur you on to want to learn more. He's got a good sense of humor and speaks in a way that someone without a degree can understand. Highly Recommended. The premise is weird but interesting. Weird because these kids seem too talented to be in high school, and interesting because it involves what happens to a family after a child goes missing. Ok. So, there's this teenage filmmaker, Brenda. And she's just oozing talent. Her little sister, Amanda, is also oozing talent as an actress who stars in her older sis' films. Both girls are well-liked and like each other. So when her little sister traipses out into the woods to sneak a few beers and never comes home, Brenda is devastated. More so when her parents blame her in a local television interview for not keeping a better eye on Amamda.

Fast forward a few years and Brenda is 18. She hasn't picked up a camera since Amanda disappeared, her parents are zombies, and she's now living on her own. She's been hearing local legends about some kind of a freaky supernatural bridge that appears in the same woods that swallowed her sister. The whole thing is connected to a creature called Opso that is spoken about only in whispers when a random hiker goes missing. She feels like whatever this thing is, it might be responsible for her sister's disappearance. But no one will believe her unless she gets some kind of evidence. So Brenda packs up her equipment and heads into the woods to get this thing on video.

So the gist is that you have this married couple who have two young girls. When it opens they're both annoyed with each other, and it's bordering on resentful. Seemingly just those petty (and not so petty) things that eat at marriages. Who does more for the children, who gave up what so the other person could have their dream job, who didn't show up on time for dinner, etc.

Things escalate pretty quickly and go from normal side-eying & squabbling to weird - to really weird. Throw in a male off-brand Buffy the Werewolf Slayer, a husband and father who is seriously questioning his life choices, and two frightened children that will most definitely need therapy in the future, and you get a decent little horror shorty. Recommended.

A journalist with unresolved feelings toward her roommate interviews a man about an event he witnessed as a child. He spins her a tale about his now-deceased father and the contentious relationship they had due to his dad's unlikable personality...and the fact that he forced him to play baseball. Their last day together was at a local game where some kind of supernatural swamp blossoms did something that he's still trying to understand to this day.

Willy and Marianne sold their apartment in the city and moved to a farmhouse in Maine after Marianne suffered a miscarriage earlier in the year. Marriane needed to heal. But Will suffered too. He wanted that baby so much. He wanted to be a father so badly. And maybe if he’d had someone to talk to, the wound wouldn’t have festered. And if he hadn’t let it fester, then he might not have let that guy at the country store talk him into taking that creepy old pram home with him. And then he wouldn’t have heard that baby crying…

But let's face it, their biggest mistake was moving to Maine. Maine is where you go if you want to live in a haunted house with sewers full of clowns, rabid dogs roaming the streets unchecked, and knickknack shops run by the Devil. They should have moved to Florida. At least the alligators aren’t demon-possessed. Then again, no place is perfect.
