I thought I was getting the original Ultimate Spider-Man, Vol. 1: Power and Responsibility for a friend of mine's kid.

Now imagine my horror when I flipped open the pages and looked into Miles' big brown puppy dog eyes. I. Couldn't. Look. Away. I'm going to be 100% honest, I really didn't think I was actually going to listen to this one when I downloaded it. It was one of those Hoopla Bonus Borrows that sort of caught my eye, so I went ahead and snagged it just in case I ran low on listening material. Which I inevitably did. So I started flipping through a few things I had, then stopped on Manners and Monsters after a few minutes of listening. It was throwing off this really good cozy mystery vibe while being set in an alternate Victorian England that had mages and werewolves and a really different take on zombies.

So, the French sent infected face power over to England during the Napoleonic Wars and this stuff turned hundreds of women (and a few men) of the ton into brain craving undead. Now, as long as they get a steady diet of brains (from the already dead bodies whose family's have been financially compensated) these gently bred ladies can stave off the rot. It's a whole thing. <--but don't worry, it's all explained.

The story picks up with our Plain Jane heroine at her BFF's engagement soiree. All is going well until... MURDER! A footman is murdered and all of his brains are scooped out!

Hannah gets involved for REASONS that totally make sense and helps uncover the perpetrator with a very broody noble who works for the police department. <--he has reasons, as well. And there's a whole lot more to the story but I don't want to spoil the fun.

An this was fun. Not change-your-life fun but fun nonetheless. I'm genuinely curious to listen to the next book in the series and see what secrets it reveals about our hero and heroine. Because a lot was hinted at that piqued my interest in finding out more about what these characters are hiding. I'm in, Ms. Wallace.

That's Ninth House in a nutshell. I mean, parts of it are good but there's a lot of boring packed into this one, and it took a long time to get anywhere interesting. The pacing was so goddamn sloooooooow that I think the story would have really benefitted from a good chop to the page count. And the magic societies were kind of lame. Or if not lame, less awesome than I would have hoped. Whiny rich kids manipulating the stock market and picking what single goes to #1 on the charts? Ehhhh.

The two main characters - Alex & Darlington? Neither was super likable. Not that I have to like characters to enjoy a book. But both of them were kind of off-putting as people. And they both had good reason, I guess. But every time I'd think that I felt a bit of sympathy for either of them, they'd do or say something that would just take me back to square one. I don't know. I just couldn't muster up any sort of feelings of kinship with them. Now, by the end? I liked Alex a lot more. And Darlington...? Well, I wish him the best.
So the gist is that this girl, Alex, can see ghosts. Now because of this, she's been horribly misunderstood as a child, had some terrible things happen to her, ended up on drugs & living with awful people, and eventually wound up in the middle of a murder that left her boyfriend and best friend dead. Enter Leafy.<--I listened to the audiobook and had to look it up. It's actually Lethe, but while I was listening to it I was like, what the fuck kind of secret society calls itself LEAFY?

Lethe is the 9th House that sort of supervises the magic that all the other (real) Houses do, in order to keep them from killing hobos. <--I'm really not joking. And since Alex can see ghosts these guys want her to become the new Dante (it's a stupid code name) for their house. This comes with a full ride to Yale and a new start. Which looks pretty good when you wake up in a hospital and find out everyone you lived with is dead. <--naturally, there's way more to that story, but you have to read the book to find out what it is. Anyway. According to this, all of the secret societies (Scroll and Key, Skull and Bones. etc.) are steeped in magic, available to the rich and famous, and alive and well at Yale University. There's a lot of research that Bardugo must have done for this book, and it shows. Unfortunately, not necessarily in a good way for someone like myself. There was too much crunchy wah, wah, wah history of New Haven, and not enough cool/spooky magic stuff. And it's really hard for me to wade through a lot of who-gives-a-fuck and come out on the other end of it smiling.

Don't get me wrong, there were some excellent bits to Ninth House, so it's not like I hated it or anything. The book ended on a cliffhanger (which was fine) but I'm not sure if I'll keep going with this series or not. It really picked up during the last bit, so I guess I'll just wait and see.

After listening, however, I don't think Lovecraft is for me. None of these were spooky at all. And it often seemed as though the whole point of the story was for the author to find new ways of describing things. It was more an exercise in being lyrical than in being scary or interesting. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's something I personally hate in a book. To each his own.

One story was just about these two dudes getting fucked up on hallucinogens (or whatever they managed to get their hands on) in order to explore the outer limits of the mind and find out what was on the other side of consciousness. It didn't end well. But I imagine it doesn't end well for a lot of people who eat that much acid for years and years. Important shit tends to slip through the cracks when you're in a stupor and making decisions based on paranoia.

There was also a story about a group of 'terrifying' subterranean apes that would pop up out of the ground during thunderstorms and eat people. The big twist? Another story was about some magician/escape artist who got hogtied & dropped down into a tomb in Egypt while on vacation. While there he saw a bunch of weird stuff related to some long-forgotten death god who looked like a Hippo with tiny hands. <--or something? To be honest, it was really a longwinded story and I zoned in and out a lot. There was a whole bunch of garbage about all the sightseeing and whatnot he and his wife did before we get to the death god stuff, and it was pretty dull unless you're just really into travelogues.

There are folks out there that love it when authors go out of their way to add in extra blah, blah, blah stuff. The stupid thing is, his fakey world would have worked if he hadn't put that clause in there that romantic relationships and close friendships were forbidden. What? Why? Now, I listened to this as a stand-alone short story, not as part of a collection, and let me be the first to say that it wasn't all that impressive. Just a very simple story that, to be very honest, wasn't all that interesting. Also, I'm quite aware that Christie wasn't known for her mysteries being solvable beforehand, but in this setting, it was really annoying. You're following Tuppence around and suddenly Tommy walks in with the answer at the end.

I loved it! It was dark and freaky with some spooky paranormal undertones, the new characters were interesting and the old characters were well done. It wasn't fluffy or funny, but it had a great plot and a cool vibe.
Despite the lovely art and pulpy feel to Masks, I had an incredibly hard time finishing it. Ok, so this is exactly what it says it is. Dude is a weird dective. The other cops blame all his oddness on being Canadian (because we all know how strange those guys are) but his bizarre speech and behavior are actually the result of his being a shapeshifting alien. <--from a whole nother planet - not just Toronto!

Alright. So there's this monster hunter/hardboiled detective guy who has (maybe recently?) been turned into some sort of demon/vampire thing. And now he loses his temper a lot. There's a couple of other demon/monsters who seem to be on his side and trying to help save the world, plus a cop who's ex-wife has some sort of issue with the main character (b/c of something that happened in another book) who is also trying to help. These guys fumble around, then kick ass. The end.
The characters and world seemed interesting but there was just so much fucking information missing that while I got the gist of it, I also missed too much to give this a proper review. I'm settling on 3 stars because while the art wasn't to my taste, I liked the general vibe that the comic gave off.

Ok, sadly, my first and only real introduction to The Shadow was that horrible Alec Baldwin movie in 1994. Ooof! And as you can imagine, it didn't inspire me to dig much deeper into the character or the comics. But when I saw this on the shelf in my local library, I couldn't resist. I'm always a sucker for those Year One titles, you know? Anyway, I'm glad I snagged it. Very cool.

I did some serious digging into the origin of this character (and by serious digging, I mean I pulled up a Wikipedia page and poked around on the internet for about 10 minutes) and discovered a few things I didn't know. First, I didn't realize that The Shadow got his start on a 1930's radio show. I mean, I knew he was a radio character but I didn't realize he was that old. Although, in retrospect, when was the last time the family all gathered around the radio to listen to...anything? Second, I was never sure which came 1st, the show or the comic. But apparently, the pulp comics were a spin-off from the very popular radio show. And, well...ok. That's all I really know.

Which means I'm just about the perfect audience for this thing, given that I know next to nothing about who this dude is and what he does. A Year One comic that sneezes up a bit of an origin story would be great for someone who needs an introduction. And this gave me a much better story than I ever imagined I'd get!

I think she was just originally a socialite but in this one, she's a kept woman (that one always makes me laugh) who was living with a gross mob boss so that he would keep her in the style she was accustomed to before her dad went broke. The mob guy was the last (and least appealing) in a long line of guys she'd been shacking up with. Oh, Margo. Tsk. You don't have to show the boys your boobs to make them like you! Although, if you want them to pay for your trip to the Carribean? Pull them titties out, girl. Of course, Lamont can't resist her womanly wiles for long and they partner up. <--eh, eh? Get it?

Ok, so the gist is that a crimefighter, with some mild telepathy & someone else's name/fortune, is hunting a mystical nemesis who takes over people's wills. He's slowly building up a network of loyal agents, falling for the tenacious Margo Lane, and freaking folks out with his laugh. It doesn't sound good, I'll admit. But it was!

For some reason, there is this company that activates and deactiveates a man into his superhero identity (Gemini) and civilian identity (Dan), with neither personality remembering anything of the other. Lab rats/handlers are continually watching through special contact lenses that Gemini wears. All of this we learn as a new female employee is brought in to replace his old handler because of some scandal that happened. Dun, dun, dunnnnnn....

The story isn't all that...well, it skims the idea of the plot. It's not an in-depth sort of thing like Velvet, it's more of a silly version (<--in a good way) of a story. So, you aren't getting the backstory on how Josie became Josie-the-Assassin or how Josie became Josie-the-Housewife. She's ruthless...until she's not. Again, not really any depth. However, that's not to say it wasn't an excellent comic. I know it sounds like maybe I didn't like it, but that's not true.

The art is the star here and really makes it worth diving into, even if the pot is a tad thin. I'd certainly like to get my hands on the second volume and see if it brings to light a bit more of Josie's origins. The kids from Riverdale go on a Spring Break romp to the jungle and bring back a cursed knife and a new friend. There's not much to this story other than what you would expect from any comic that had the Predator running around in it. Lots of screaming, lots of cartoony gore, lots of mascara running, and lots of dead folks. [image] Plus, you know, love and friendship in a small-town setting. [image] I liked it. It had some cute nods to stuff happening in the other Archie universes, and it managed to stay somewhat true to the original storyline of these characters. I'm not sure what I was expecting from Drowned Earth - actually, I wasn't expecting anything. I just happened to see it in the library and thought it was great luck that they had a copy available. I didn't even know what the story was supposed to be about, so I went into it with a pretty open mind, hoping for the best and really wanting to like it.

And I did. Sort of. For example, I'd really like to read more about the Titans now. I thought their cameo in this was short but sweet.

As for the rest of it? I don't know. It's epic. It involves Poseidon & alien gods, Batman and Jarro, Aquaman getting stripped of his Aquapowers (kinda) and going on a vision quest of sorts, plus a bunch of other stuff. Epic stuff.

The gist is that a kid (in 1985) who reads comics finds out that the villains from Marvel are invading his hometown. On top of that, he's dealing with his mother's remarriage and his dad's slacker attitude about life. From a kid's point of view, I can see how the dad is a victim/hero. But as an adult woman? Yeah, I would have divorced his stupid ass and remarried the responsible guy with the job. Sorry. I know that isn't romantic, but there you have it.

I can't quite put my finger on what it was missing, but it was (and this sounds crazy b/c PLASTIC MAN!) almost too silly at times. <--I know, I know, I know! But there was all this small time mob Pay up, pally! *meeeh, meeeh* Or you'll be sleepin' with the fishes, see? stuff that seemed kind of out of whack with the rest of...everything. And, yeah. I get that Plastic Man (aka Patrick Eel O'Brian) started out as a criminal, so that part makes sense. And as far as a retelling of his origin story, it was ok. There was some kind of oomph missing for me, though.

However, it did feature a young trans person who was trying to decide who they wanted to be when they grew up. From my (pretty ignorant) view, it seemed like Simone did a nice job representing trans people. There was evidently some sort of internet kerfuffle where she (preemptively?) apologized for this (below) image of Plastic Man as Harley because of the 'bulge' in his pants. I think Simone was worried that her meaning (Plas is poking fun at Harley but still himself at his core) would get mixed up and twisted into the myth that trans women try to 'trick' straight men. Again, I'm not in the know about any of that, but it truly seems that Simone is a caring writer and didn't do anything offensive on purpose. I had no idea this was even a thing until I looked up the comic, and it honestly seemed like most everyone was super nice to her about it.

Ok, so the gist of the story is about Eel getting these powers due to a botched robbery, meeting a kid that needs him, finding out about some bad guys who are infiltrating the Justice League/Teen Titans/Etc., and trying to make amends for being a shitbag.

The beginning was interesting, the middle was ok, the Big Showdown was a massive WTF, and the ending was sweet. Overall, worth reading if you are jonesing for some Plastic Man....more

The narrator/butler pulls a Deadpool and talks to the editor throughout the entire thing. Flashbacks really annoy him. Every issue...
