This time around we're introduced to John Stweart, the Yellow Lanterns, & one of the little blue guys. I liked the new take on each and every one of them.

The Earth is once again playing the role of Reactionary Idiots as some of the rich and powerful try to start a war, leaving Hal and his newfound friends to try to stop all the other life forms in the galaxy from wiping their alien asses with the rubble of our planet. Of course, there are layers upon layers of conspiracies to wade through before they can figure out who is really behind it all. And more importantly, why?
Space Terrorists! Boo. But aren't we all terrorists to someone? Yay. Also, Rayner is (to me) the blandest of the Lanterns.

This was a weird go-nowhere sort of story about the corruption of religion, the evils of capitalism, and the horrors of waging revolution and losing your soul. The short version is that no one is the bad guy and everyone is the bad guy.

The longer version is that Kyle gets forcibly recruited into a terrorist organization that calls themselves The Omega Men (<--a religious reference to one of their gods), and ends up doing spoilery stuff with them after they supposedly cut his throat on live space tv.

It's pretty thinly veiled to mirror real-world happenings. And the point King ultimately makes is that to overthrow a cruel government the leaders of the insurgency end up becoming exactly what they fought against in the first place. History repeats itself over and over again.
[image] Not every story needs to be uplifting, but this one kind of makes you feel as though there is really no point in bothering to try and change things for the better. Which is and isn't true. The fight to make things better will never end, simply because the personality type of the people who want to be in charge just lends itself to corruption. Plus, there will always be greedy selfish people. So even if things change for the better, once those better people are in control, they either become corrupted or are overthrown by someone who is corrupt. And the cycle starts again. That doesn't mean you need to roll over and take evil shit because it's meaningless to fight. It just means you need to understand that there's never going to be a point that you won't need to stand up and be willing to push back against injustice....more
Ok, it looks like this will be the Green Lantern title that I follow from here on out. I know a lot of you guys are really enjoying the Simon and Jessica Green Lantern title, but for whatever reason those two just don't turn me on.
Anyhoo, this starts off with Hal forging a Green Lantern ring, using that freaky gauntlet that he stole, and an assload of (say it with me, people) willpower. For those of you who haven't been following Hal the past few years, you may want to go back and read the previous volume, Reflections. Yeah, I know this says volume 1, but you know the drill... It doesn't explain why/how/where the GL Corps disappeared, but it will give you some explanation about Hal's new power set.

While Hal is scouring the galaxy to find out what happened to the Corps, John Stewart (leading what remains of the missing GL's) pops out of some sort of black hole looking thing.

They're all fucked up and drained, but Guy volunteers to head out into the wild blue (probably not blue) yonder and try to find out what's been happening while they were gone. And promptly gets captured. By Sinestro.

I was not only happy that Gardner got some good scenes in this, but that Sinestro is back to being a truly villainous bad guy. And since Sinestro had the Parallax entity and Hal hadn't tested the upper limits of his new supercharged persona, it made for a pretty cool showdown at the end.

I'm sure a lot of my friends will prefer the new Earth-based Green Lanterns, but Hal, John, and Guy just hit my sweet spot. Looking forward to following what happens next for them!...more

Bottom line? I thought Jessica was a cool character when I read about her originally, but this time around she didn't impress me at all. Plus, I found the entire storyline dull for some reason. I'd read a few pages and then put it down, so it took me over a week to finish this one volume - which is just waaay too long for a comic book. There was nothing particularly bad about this thing, but it wasn't my personal cuppa and the thought of going back for more of this just doesn't do it for me....more

The big showdown with the mulitverse hopping Parallax possessed Hal (Halallax?) leads into our Hal discovering the outer limits of the Green Lantern Gauntlet-thingy he's been wearing in lieu of a GL ring. The results are a bit scary...

Naturally, he's gotta go...find himself or whatever, and that leads into the bonus Hal Jordan & the Green Lantern Corps: Rebirth issue.

Basically, this gauntlet thing is turning him into a construct of pure will, and he's got to figure out how not to lose himself in the process. So why doesn't he just take the damn thing off? Well, (view spoiler)[because he's figured out that he can forge a Green Lantern ring for himself, and he just needs to hold on for a bit an focus. This ring will be (naturally) different.

I've been reading Green Lantern since Geoff Johns brought Hal back in the originalRebirth, so there was no way I wasn't going to read this one. I'm not sure what your feelings are on this title, but I've certainly had a love-hate relationship with it over the years. Lately I think it mostly sucked, so I'm hoping this reboot (or whatever it is) will breathe new life into the corps. This last volume wasn't awful, but I'd still only recommend it to the hardcore fans....more

I vaguely remember Jordan took off after the Godhead storyline, but it didn't impress me enough for the reason why to stick. But evidently it doesn't matter, because something mysterious has happened in the time between the last volume and this one, and whatever it was is only hinted at in Renegade. In other words, don't feel bad if you're not sure what's going on. For some reason all of the Green Lanterns are gone, Hal is a wanted man, and everything just picks up from there. shrugs

Giant Space Guy is back, and so is Black hand. Their stories intertwine because of that massive Wall at the End of the Universe. <--forgot what it's called, and I don't care enough to go back and look. There's also the introduction of two new sidekickish characters (one good, one more morally ambiguous), and a sassy talking spaceship. Eh. I didn't hate them.

Hal was kind of a mess. I don't know what happened, but I think they were going Space Pirate and missed the mark. It felt more like Knight Rider in Space, and not in a good way. In a bloated, aging, drunken Hasselhoff way. *shudders*

And not that it matters, but Hal's eyes go from brown, to blue, and then back to brown again. It was odd, but still not as odd as that hair.

Jessica and Simon are both GL's from Earth, and not fond of each other. Apparently, all the other GL's are busy doing (I'm assuming) Rebirthy stuff, so Hal shows up and knocks their stubborn heads (and power batteries) together.

You know, like physically bigger than a normal volume? Part of me thought it was cool, and the other part of me felt like I do when I accidentally request the large print version of a book. Oh, shiiiiit. This is fuckin' huge! Still, it's different with graphic novels, because bigger actually is better. It's not like you're just staring at larger font after all. Another neat-o thing the Absolute had was a pretty little green ribbon attached to it for use as a bookmark. Classy! Ok, ok! You also get the story In Flight by Darwyn Cooke , which was a nice little shorty.

There's the script for the first issue (or whatever) in the back, as well. I personally never ever, no never, read those. Boooooring. Why would I read the script of a comic book? I think it takes a special sort of fan to want to read through all of the notes and whatnot. To me, it's the equivalent of watching a movie again, only this time with the commentary from the actors or director on. I can't bring myself to care even a little bit about what was running through their heads when they shot a certain scene. Just like I can't bring myself to care about notations made to a comic script. Oh shit! I just flipped through it! There's not even any notations. Hahahaha! It's just a straight-up script. Like, word for word what's in the comic. Well, fuck that noise. That's just stupid. Right, Hal?

Ok, now I know I make fun of Green Lantern comics all of the time, but this one was written when this title was still cool. Before there were 10 bjillion spin-off titles, endless crossover events, and a plethora of watered-down new characters. This was the GOOD stuff.

Sometimes, I wonder why the hell I keep reading Green Lantern titles, and that's why I'm rereading this again. I needed something to remind me of why I fell in love with the Corps. Before the clusterfuck storylines that New 52 brought to the table, Hal Jordan was one of the best and most badass superheroes in the DC universe.

Oh, and believe it or not, this is one of the few Green Lantern stories that makes Kyle seem like a true ass-kicker. Check this art out:

The story? Well, even though it's called Rebirth, Hal wasn't dead. Not really anyway. After he turned evil, became Parallax, destroyed a bunch of shit, and then sacrificed himself to re-light the sun, his spirit bonded with the Spectre. For those of you who don't know, he's the Spirit of Vengeance, and supposedly works for God doling out justice to bad guys. <---accidentally typed gays instead of guys. Dude! If I hadn't caught that, somebody would have thought poor old Spectre was a homophobic religious figure. How weird would that be?! Anyway, Hal, Parallax, and Spectre are all having a 3 way.

And, at this point in the game, nobody knows that Parallax is the entity of Fear. Not even Hal. Everyone thinks that Jordan just went crazy, or power-mad, or...something. And now he's trying to redeem himself by serving as Spectre's human form.

So, the rest of the story is all about how the existence of Parallax comes to light, and Hal gets divorced from Spectre.

The highlight of this story is definitely when Batman gets his ass handed to him. Ass. Handed. To. Him. First, by John Stewart, who calls him out for constantly railing on Hal.

Guh. If you've been following his story, you know that he is the lone White Lantern, and holds the Life Equation within himself. What is the Life Equation? It's a bunch of mumbo-jumbo leftover from the battle with Relic. You remember? The wall at the end of the universe, and... Yeah. Anyway, Kyle somehow absorbed all of this power, and has these reality altering powers.

Right. So. That. Also, Carol Ferris and Kyle are a thing now. Which, just pisses me off, frankly. The idea that my least favorite Lantern somehow snaked Carol away from Hal makes me want to rage like a Hulk. It's gross! Stop it!

Whatever. The first half of this is more of the Green Lantern/New Gods: Godhead story. Only, you know, broken up into a tiny chunk, so you don't actually see the conclusion. Rock on, DC!

The basic story is that Kyle gets his widdle feelings hurt because the Blue Brigade lied to him. <--For his own protection, and probably because they realized he's too much of an idiot to be turned loose without a babysitter. Still. They lied. He got butthurt. So, what's the smartest thing to do when you realize that you've been played? Run headfirst into the arms of an insanely powerful being that you've never met before, and then give up all of your super-duper special powers to him! Duh. God! I hate you so much, Kyle! *strangle, strangle*

Oh, I almost forgot! During this time, Kyle & Carol's relationship gets a bit rocky, because he had accidentally turned her into his dead girlfriend (Alex, of the Girl in the Fridge fame) when his reality-altering White ring got out of control. Admittedly, this may have led him to the decision to turn his ring over to Highfather. Still, it was a bonehead move. I mean, I am a villain - do not trust me vibes are practically wafting off of this guy in waves. No good guy...ever...poses like that.

It doesn't really matter, though, because the story abruptly cuts off, and we're flung into the AFTER portion of the Godhead storyline. Great! Now we're moving on to the Oblivion portion of this volume. Who/what is Oblivion, you ask? Well, do any of you remember that Marvel character, Sentry? The one who was constantly fighting his alter-ego the Void? Yeah. Ok. That's Oblivion. He was created from Kyle's subconscious fears that he would become too powerful and kill/destroy/re-imagine/fix-without-permission everyone he loved. Kinda like what he did to Carol.

The last few issues should have discussed how Carol was going to dump Kyle's wimpy ass, and make her way back to Hal. Or even stay single! Just...no more Carol & Kyle. *gags* But. That's not what happened. Nope, this is all about how everyone who loves Kyle (<--and apparently that still includes Carol!) comes together to help him fight his evil clone.

It looks like in order to save everyone he loves, he'll have to sacrifice himself. YAY! But after facing his demons, and realizing that he can't do it by himself, he finds that the REAL solution is...TEAMWORK. {insert me throwing up here} As in, he (with the help of the blue guys) creates a new team of Lanterns.

Annnnnnd now there is yet another Lantern Corps running around. Because we really needed that. And even though Carol & Kyle still aren't 100%, they fly off into the sunset anyway.

Ok. So, why 3 stars if I hated it so much? Well, I think my hatred mostly comes from how much I dislike this character, and not because the writing was awful. And I don't want to turn anyone off of this volume, if they don't have the same prejudice against Lego Face as I do....more

However, you could just read volume 6 of the Green Lantern title, because (I think) it has enough of the story in that one to give you the gist of it.

Like I said, there was very little in this one that I hadn't already seen, but seeing those few missing pieces, plus seeing them in some sort of order, was nice. Really nice.

All together this makes a better story than it does when read in snippets...duh. But it's still not the best Lantern event I've ever read. And I think that's because there are just too many fucking Lantern titles right now. I know I've been complaining about that for a long time now, but it's still true. I love some of the new characters (Reds in particular), but I don't think each Lantern needs their own book. Maybe if DC didn't try to make their stories intersect so much, it might be fun? But with all of these events, it's just too chaotic.

Unfortunately, you don't get the conclusion (of course!), so you'll have to hunt that part down separately. I've got Green Lantern/New Gods: Godhead sitting in front of me right now, and it looks like that is the compilation I've been looking for to finally get the complete story. I'll update this when I finish it, for the two of you who care.

Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that there isn't any point in the first half of this volume, because you're going to have to go hunt down the full story elsewhere. However, John getting a Star Sapphire ring does come into play in the last few issues...

The second half is a pretty good self-contained GL story with John and some of the rookies (now full Green Lanterns) on a mission to one of the Lantern's home world.

Looks like there's a new/ancientBig Threat on the horizon for the Green Lanterns. And while everything that happens in these issues will likely play into a larger storyline, it still had a beginning, middle, and end to it. Yes, please! May we have a few more tales like this?

I'm actually a little heartbroken... BUT. It seems like Gardner sorta has his life back on track, because it open him taking a beach vacation with his lady love.

And then it all goes downhill. He get into a fight with (what appears to be) some random bad guy, which lead into a crossover with the New Gods.

Again, I'm not sure what the backstory is here, but it was sort of cool, right up till the Rage Baby made an appearance. And kicked his ass! I'm not making this up, I swear!

That story ends with Guy's sister on an escape pod, orbiting the Earth, and giving life-advice to her brother. All while babysitting Rage Baby.

Highfather showed up at the end of the last volume, and that storyline is the core of this one. The New Gods have come to our universe to get the Life Equation, and finally have the means to defeat Darkseid. Of course, in order to do that they need to wreck everything on this end.

I mean, he wasn't totally evil in The End, so I assumed that they were maybe trying to pull him into anti-hero territory.

Nope. He's still pretty awful. Lyssa Drak (the evil chick who was chained to the Book of Paralax, for anyone who cares) is the narrator for the first bit of the story. She tells the origin of the rise and fall that led Sinestro to this point in his story. The (sort of) neat thing is that since she's wacky/evil herself, she tells it like he's a misunderstood hero. Except he's not. And anyone who isn't possessed by the crazy bug can see him for the control freak that he is/was...is. At any rate, Lyssa worships Sinestro like he's some nefarious boy band.

There's a few interesting things that happen once Lyssa tracks Sinestro down, but mostly it's just rock-em-sock-em stuff, as he takes the reigns of the Yellow Lanterns back. Every now and then you get a peek at a decentish character, but he's mostly too assy to get behind at this point. However, he does sort of declare an uneasy truce with Hal and his daughter, Soranik. She agrees to (sort of) team up with him to find the remaining Kougarians who had fled the planet before it was destroyed, by...shit. I can't even remember who blew it up? Anyone? Anyone? You know what? Doesn't matter. Nobody is going to read this. You know why? It's A Sinestro Comic Book! It's me and one other nerd out there, that are even reading anything remotely related to the Green Lanterns!

The end had a twist to it that I really didn't see coming. I mean, it's foreshadowed in the blurb. He's so much more... But I just thought it was more yammering overblown blurbyness. It's a word if I say so!
The last issue was a weird Future-thing. Blech. No. I don't like those, and DC needs to stop it.

Ok, this thing was pretty thick, so I thought that maybe the title has been cancelled, and they just packed everything into one last volume. But nope. There's more juicy, juicy Red Lantern drama on the way.
First half of the book was pretty darn good. You get the full Atrocitus origin story, including what he did before becoming leader of the Reds, but after his home world was destroyed by the Manhunters. 'Cause, if you think about it, there was a huge gap in time there. He should have already been dead, right? I mean, the Guardians got rid of the Manhunters before the decided to even start the GL program! Anyway, this part of the book answers that question.
Of course, you also get to see what the Red Lanterns did to help bring down the First Lantern. And this volume includes the epilogue thingy from Green Lantern, Vol. 3: The End. This was literally the third or fourth time I've read it, so I'm assuming they stuck in every GL title they had. Nice padding, by the way. I think this would have been a small B cup, without the filler.
The last little bit had to do with the human Lantern, Rankorr. He's been struggling to hold on to his humanity, but it seems he needs to make a choice. It an earlier issue, he saves a girl from her stalker boyfriend, and they start dating. Bleeze shows up, outs him as a monster, and the chick (wisely) makes a run for it. Ok. So now Rankorr decides to go back to Earth, and try to use his powers for good. In the meantime, Stalker Boyfriend breaks into Wise Chick's house, and beats her up. Rankorr goes all ragey, and tries to get his ex to see the error of her ways. She should just let Rankorr kill him, and be done with it. She thinks he's nuts, and tells him that she's going to call the police, and have the guy who beat her put in jail. 'Cause, you know, that's what separates us from the animals. As long as she doesn't drop the charges two weeks later... Which is why I won't be calling the police if some dude hits one of my girls. A restraining order is all well and good. However, I doubt we'll need it, 'cause I think it will be really difficult for him to make a fist once the rigor mortis sets in.
Overall, I'm still happy with the Red Lantern title, and I'm looking forward to the next volume.
