What do cables on the ocean floor have to do with the State Department? Undersea cables carry more than 95% of the world’s digital traffic. Any disruption or compromise could isolate a country, threaten national security, or lead to billions of dollars in damage. That’s why we’re working with our partners and private companies to ensure this infrastructure is secure and resilient. “This partnership is absolutely essential,” Secretary Blinken said when he visited technology company NEC Corporation in Tokyo during his recent trip to Asia. That’s also why we are always on the lookout for architects, engineers, digital communication experts and others to join our team. About us
The U.S. Department of State is focused on accomplishing America's mission of diplomacy at home and around the world. The U.S. Department of State manages America’s relationships with foreign governments, international organizations, and the people of other countries. U.S. diplomats and Civil Service professionals carry out the President’s foreign policy and help build a more free, prosperous, and secure world. U.S. Department of State employees, with their skills, character and commitment to public service, are the backbone of America's diplomacy. They represent the people and advocate the interests of the U.S. to the rest of the world. The Foreign Service (FS) is dedicated to representing America and responding to the needs of American citizens in other countries. Members of the Foreign Service can be sent to any embassy, consulate, or other diplomatic mission anywhere in the world, at any time, to serve the diplomatic needs of the United States. Civil Service (CS) employees provide in-depth expertise and continuity in accomplishing all aspects of the Department's mission and are involved in virtually every function of the Department. Civil Service employees issue passports, compile and analyze overseas reports, provide logistical support to posts, consult with Congress about foreign policy initiatives and policies, and formulate and manage the budget. Nearly 7,400 Civil Service (CS) employees serve as a stable resource pool in Washington D.C., at Passport Agencies and field offices throughout the United States, and at several Consulates in Mexico. More than 31,000 Foreign Service National (FSN) employees also supplement the personnel requirements of the Department overseas. FSN employees are local residents of the countries in which we maintain diplomatic posts and consulates. They are valued members of our embassy teams, for they provide continuity for the transient American staff and have language and cultural expertise.

Paul Whelan, Evan Gershkovich, and Alsu Kurmasheva are now on their way back to the United States from Russia. Through the extraordinary efforts of countless people in the State Department and across our government, the United States was able to strike an agreement to secure their freedom, as well as that of Vladimir Kara-Murza and twelve others held prisoner inside Russia. Under President Biden’s leadership, we have secured the release of dozens of Americans who were held hostage or wrongfully detained. My pledge to the families of those still separated from their families is the same that I made to those returning home today. We will not forget you, and we will not rest until you see your loved ones again. - Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken

Someone you know probably works for a company that sells products or services in Southeast Asia. Or maybe you have met an exchange student from the region. But you might not have ever heard of ASEAN. Brunei Darussalam, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam make up the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, known as ASEAN. These 10 Asian countries represent the world’s fourth-largest market. Secretary Blinken met with leaders from those countries during The ASEAN Secretariat’s recent meeting in Laos. They discussed maritime issues, the South China Sea, the crisis in Burma, and more. Take a listen from U.S. Ambassador to ASEAN, Yohannes Abraham, on what ASEAN and the region mean to the U.S. and how it fits with the U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy.

U.S. Department of State reposted this
The U.S. will only have strong, smart technology diplomacy if it has strong, smart technology diplomats. Eric Geller embedded in our course at the U.S. Department of State Foreign Service Institute and wrote about it in WIRED. "From Russian election interference to Chinese industrial dominance, the US faces a panoply of digital threats. Fighting back will require skillful diplomatic pressure campaigns on every level, from bilateral talks with individual countries to sweeping appeals before the 193-member United Nations. But this kind of work is only possible when the career Foreign Service officers on the front lines of US diplomacy understand why tech and cyber issues matter—and how to discuss them." Thanks to Maryum Saifee, Kathryn Smith Fitrell, Melanie Kaplan, Eileen Donahoe JD, Ph.D, Christopher Painter, Keith Krach, Joan Polaschik, Richard Verma and the many others who've made this innovative training possible. https://lnkd.in/gqqfm9-7
