4.5/5.
Longlegs (2024) Edgar Ortega Oz Perkins’ vision is singular and confident, building a tone that perfectly captures the evil nature of the film’s themes and characters. If Silence of the Lambs and Rosemary’s Baby had a love child, Longlegs would be that kid.

Your Fat Friend (2023) Connor Lightbody helps shed light on certain aspects of life as a fat person but it then becomes more of a hagiography than an inspection of anti-fat culture, which are the more compelling elements

2.5/5
The Future (2023) Connor Lightbody the scattered monotony of The Future’s delivery robs the film of any intriguing power it might have

The Lesson (2023) Connor Lightbody Bolstered -saved, perhaps- by incredible performances who chew up a script that needed a little silly camp to turn this into something more than a diverting, half-watched late night thriller stuck in the 1am slot on terrestrial TV

Afire (2023) Connor Lightbody While its comedic amusement lands with a bemused incredulity, Afire’s discussion around the fragility of male writers is rich with layers, none that feel compelled to untangle themselves from a film that on the surface seems suffocatingly simple.

Thank You Very Much (2023) Connor Lightbody For those who have already been subject to the Kaufman mythology, this perfectly adequate and straightforward documentary presents very little new material other than some previously unseen footage

Long December (2023) Connor Lightbody For all that you wish it had more notes to it’s symphony, Long December is a breezy, pleasant tale, even if it’s a film done before

Monica (2022) Connor Lightbody a [Trace] Lysette performance that we should be considering as one of the greatest performances put to film in recent years

Utama (2022) Connor Lightbody a beguiling, beautiful movie, which Grisi’s passion for this subject makes ache with authenticity, but this passion never translates to anger. He just seems disappointed.

3.5/5
Marmalade (2024) Connor Lightbody while the screenplay is desperate for another pass to help Marmalade make sense of itself, the entire film has this unapologetic and unrelenting sense of confident gusto

Suncoast (2024) Connor Lightbody While there’s nothing particularly new in the framework...writer-director Laura Chinn brings Suncoast together with the strength and confidence of someone highly engaged with the story

The Burning Season (2023) Connor Lightbody even though the construction of the movie does it no dramatic favours, that it even attempts to do something structurally fresh is worth applauding

Lousy Carter (2023) Connor Lightbody the character is so frustratingly morose that none of the comedic beats, all of which are played in the same parched way, land

American Dreamer (2022) Connor Lightbody Dinklage plays the curdled failure of a protagonist well, and his presence in the film means it has at least some personality, but he’s unable to save the film from a script that is unsubtle and dull

3/5
Falling Into Place (2023) Connor Lightbody A hopeful film about the necessity of closure and one that finds beauty in the sadness of its characters, in the luscious landscape of Scotland, in the frenzy of London, and in how fate intervenes and intertwines around our relationships

3/5
Mothers' Instinct (2024) Connor Lightbody The slow burn of Mothers’ Instinct works antithetical to the exaggerated performances, where each hammy outburst is like a shot to the chest, puncturing and deflating the tension within the film

Lost Soulz (2023) Connor Lightbody While stylistically similar to the likes of Andrea Arnold’s American Honey, it paves its own contemporary path as a commentary on Gen Z’s artistic motivations and their relationship with technology

The Small Back Room (1949) Connor Lightbody ...the kind of old-school drama whose technique and craft put to shame some modern filmmaking

Velvet Goldmine (1998) Connor Lightbody A titillating dreamscape of a film that is presented as outrageous and lavish, having the same unbridled flamboyance as the people being portrayed

Dune: Part Two (2024) Edgar Ortega Villeneuve continues to push boundaries by creating thematically rich epics. We take these movies for granted, but when filmmakers are asked to take fewer risks, I am grateful for weird, grim blockbusters like Dune: Part Two.

Drive-Away Dolls (2024) Edgar Ortega Drive-Away Dolls is a fever dream of a movie. The type of dream you need to adjust to, but once you do, you’ll want to spend more time on it.

She Loved Blossoms More (2024) Edgar Ortega She Loved Blossoms More is at its finest when it delivers bizarre creatures to be distracted by. It’s a well-acted film with an impressive visual style... I just wish its grasp on its themes were as strong as the film thinks they are.

The Dog Thief (2024) Edgar Ortega The Dog Thief is one of those movies that make you feel hopeful for the future. It may not make it to my top movies of 2024, but I am sure I will recall its characters with fondness and remember how it made me feel in the moment.

Satisfied (2024) Edgar Ortega Satisfied is a straightforward documentary... Can it feel like it is patting itself on the back? Yeah, but I don’t see this as an issue. Sometimes, you have to be proud of your achievements and brag about them a little to the world.

Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 (2024) Hector A. Gonzalez While Chapter 1 of Horizon: An American Saga exudes an old-school Western magnetism, Costner’s vision and scope are televisual rather than cinematic.

Firebrand (2023) Hector A. Gonzalez In Firebrand, Karim Aïnouz recaps the marriage between Katherine Parr and King Henry VIII through a stale canvas that doesn’t do justice to her powerful story.

Holy Cow (2024) Serena Seghedoni With her refusal to overdramatize conflicts and constant focus on the movie’s central character, Courvoisier delivers such mature work that it’s astonishing to think that this is her feature debut.

Black Dog (2024) Serena Seghedoni Black Dog is a western in every respect. Our solitary, silent hero [...] only trusts a select few – which, in this film, happens to be a dog. And it’s that dog who, in a town where he’s not welcome, becomes his only friend and an anchor for his humanity.

Christmas Eve in Miller's Point (2024) Serena Seghedoni beautifully portrays both the chaos and warmth of Christmas celebrations while also taking us on various journeys with its many protagonists.

Anora (2024) Serena Seghedoni without a doubt, Sean Baker’s best work to date.

The Apprentice (2024) Serena Seghedoni Had the film been either twice as exaggerated or much more grounded, we could have had either a truly hilarious fictional story or a grounded political tale about power and legacy. As it is, it tries to be both, and ends up being neither.

3.5/5
Sister Midnight (2024) Serena Seghedoni quirky and wild in a way that feels entirely its own. There are moments when you’ll be crying with laughter and others where you won’t have a clue of what’s going on, and yet, surprisingly, it absolutely works.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024) Serena Seghedoni So what if Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a little light on plot? [...] Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is the kind of film that reminds us why we love movies, and an absolute must-watch for Mad Max fans.

Kinds of Kindness (2024) Serena Seghedoni If you’re a fan of the director’s early work, you will be mesmerized by Kinds of Kindness, a film where he once again puts up a mirror to our flawed society and shows us the worst, and also the best, that humanity has to offer.

Bird (2024) Serena Seghedoni Andrea Arnold’s Bird is filmmaking of the highest quality, acting as both an invite to be exactly who we want to be and a reminder that, in the end, “everything will be ok.”

Locust (2024) Serena Seghedoni It’s clear that KEFF is trying to say something about power dynamics, corruption, social inequality, and how our indifference to brutality has made us selfish and numb. Locust partly manages to send this message across.

Humane (2024) Hector A. Gonzalez Caitlin Cronenberg’s Humane contains more than a handful of thought-provoking ideas, but she doesn’t seem to have the right hook for them.

The Fall Guy (2024) Serena Seghedoni The Fall Guy is not a bad movie; it's just a little empty, storytelling-wise. If you're looking for a light, entertaining watch, you'll have a lot of fun with it. But it could have been so much better, given its [...] premise and the talent on display.

Choose or Die (2022) Hector A. Gonzalez Choose or Die has some interesting concepts about shifting realities and some 80s nostalgia, but it never succumbs to its true potential due to an unsightly approach by director Toby Meakins.

Lux Æterna (2019) Hector A. Gonzalez Although it may seem like a gimmick at times, for the most part Gaspar Noé’s Lux Æterna engages and entrances with its split-screen techniques and bad-acid trip neon stylistic tendencies.
