I loved the aspect of amateur detective, but I also noticed how pip was really lucky most of the time to get access to a lot of the material and i'm glad that in the book ravi gets to shed some light on that: some doors open for pip who is a white girl, but these same doors weren't open for ravi, who is a brown boy. i still enjoyed it immensely after the reread and now i'm read to continue the series and finish it
English Review Below.
I usually steer clear of YA mystery/thrillers because the few ones I read get to be repetitive and juvenile and easy to predict, but this was a nice surprise! First, I didn't know there was a mixed media element in there, and that pumped it up a star instantly. Also, the main character, Pippa, was actually intriguing and somehow realistic? She wasn't a genius but she wasn't completely clueless too.
This follows Pippa who decides to make her school project about a murder case that was closed five years earlier, where two students in her town lost their lives, one being accused of murdering the other. The thing is, she believes that the one the whole town thinks is the murderer is actually innocent. So she starts bit by bit, doing her interviews and chasing clues to prove that, and what starts as a school project becomes something so much more than that. Midway through the book I guessed one of the endings, and I would've been disappointed if i would've ended with me guessing it entirely, but there were new surprises every time. I'm actually really excited to read the rest of the series now.
Also, I loved the little romance, I was kinda rooting for them to end up together. I mean, if solving a crime together doesn't make them fall in love, what would?...more

Warning, this bad has a sad ending. There's a hint of Romeo and Juliet in this love story between a black boy and a Jewish girl meeting in a posh private school. They fall in love and start to biew their relationship from their point of view, but also from the society's point of view, as a lot of people seem to have a problem seeing them together for so many reasons, and it makes them both aware of how deep the racism goes. But One of the things I liked here that unlike many YA novels where the parents' lives are so shallow or fading into the background or the parents don't even exist at all, Ellie and Miah's parents' stories are vibrant and are as important to the story line.
The story alternates POVs between Ellie and Miah, each chapter shows us inside the head of the other. The writing is gorgeous, and though it's all "love at first sight" type of story, it's not cliched and somehow fits the characters. It discuses race, bullying, family issues, double standards and hypocrisy, and police brutality. The focus isn't on the act of the police brutality itself, but on the consequences and how "inevitable" it seemed. It's sad that a book written 20 years ago would still be so relevant today.
The first chapter shows that this story ends sadly, but that didn't lessen the pain or the fact that I cried reading the last few chapters. I'm also definitely reading the second book very soon....more

A collection of poems split into 49 poems for the 49 days that the spirit roams in limbo between death and rebirth or reincarnation, and a long personal poem about pain in the end, with a total of 50 poems focusing on death, emotional and physical pain, abandonment, and loneliness.
Each poem is told by the spirit of a dead Korean, and the author said that she was affected by two main events in South Korea's history which are: Gwangju's uprising and the Sewol ferry tragedy in 2014, which killed over 300 people, most of them high school students.
I thought all of the poems would focus on these two events, but it seems that it just discusses death, as we see a poem from the point of view of a woman who died on the subway and others. The poetry style itself wasn't my cup of tea, but there were still some parts with strong imaging that hit me hard. Also the interview between her and the translator at the end was the best part of the book. I'm actually excited to read more from here, because even though her style might not be really for me, I love what she discusses....more

This is such a deceiving little book. With its colourful cover and short length, I didn't think it'd be this heartbreaking. As is written on the cover, it's a "surreal moving story of a homeless ghost who haunts one of Tokyo's busiest train stations," and it's exactly that and more.
Our main character is a ghost who spent his last days homeless in the park near Ueno station before his death, and the story alternates between his current state as a ghost and how handles it as he overhears the other homeless people, and rich people who pass through the park and he remembers his miserable life, and his life before his death which was filled with tragedy and loss. It discusses class, Japanese history, the Buddhism traditions, and the struggles or working men in Japan and the toll "office life" takes on them and their families.
This is a man who didn't spend any time with his kids and family, because he was always working trying to provide, until it was too late to try to get and know them. This man's life is tied to the imperial family, being born the same year as the emperor, his son being born on the same day as the prince, the novel doesn't only shed a light on the inequalities regular people live in modern times, it goes back in history, and shows how always the people struggled, while the rulers didn't.
The writing is haunting and heartbreaking, though sometimes I found it hard to tell if he was viewing a certain scene as a ghost or before his death, but I believe that was intentional, because even after his death, he can't be free of his pain and burdens, so it doesn't really matter in the end....more
