The characters are established now in the school for their abilities to solve mysteries and their good critical thinking, so they're tasked by another class to help them finish a mystery film they started shooting but has no way of knowing how the mystery resolves. so with each chapter we hear different theories of how the movie should go, and it discusses detective fiction as well.
it was engaging and provided even a plot twist after i thought everything was resolved, so i liked that!...more

It's set on Mars populated by humans, and we follow a military team trying to protect the interests of humans corporations against martian natives (think of Arrakis in Dune and the Fremen). but this military team starts digging more things that they're not supposed to know and it ends horribly.
It seems like it assumes a lot of thereader, like it assumes the reader is already familiar with these characters, but I admit that the ending surprised me....more

It gives us a full circle moment with Enola and her brothers and uncovering the secret of her mother, while also proving her talents as a detective. It had more emotions than previous books, but I'm still confused by their mother. It seems that she put a lot of effort in making Enola independant but she didn't raise her sons to respect their sister's independency, so in the end it doesn't matter if she's independant in that society, where her brothers have legal control on her.
Also, I can't believe that the 6 books in the series took place in just a year? what??...more

Also, loved her relationship with Mrs Tupper, as she always seeemed to be frustrated with her in previous books, but this one showed real concern and love between them. It's just sometimes she proves to be too smart for a situation and at other times, the solution is literally in her face and she doesn't recognize it, but still, she's 14 years old, so I'm cutting her some slack....more

You really had to suspend belief for most of the novel, which isn't my cup of tea in thrillers. I want them to have some sense. We follow a family of four and a girl entangled with that family, and they all have deadly secrets of their own.
The author tried to mirror the secrets of the mother and father in the youngsters, but it felt too forced. and I find it hard to believe that everyone could be so clueless like this. Also, the characters shift were sudden and sometimes happened because it was convenient, not because it made sense. It had some intrigue and that's what kept me going, but in the end, I wasn't impressed.

The mystery this time reintroduces a chracater Enola has helped before, so it was interesting. I just find it hard to believe that Enola hasn't run out of money yet, seeing as most of her work goes unpaid or the payment she gets isn't enough, but I think it's one of those things you have to not focus on.

I think I made a mistake by waiting too long to read this one after reading the 1st, but by the halfway point, I was engrossed in this.
We follow Enola, 14 years old, as she maneuvers London, escaping the clutches of her famous brothers who want to turn her into a proper lady, and landing her first case to work on, like her brother Sherlock. It's middle-grade bordering on YA becaause of some very heavy topics. I liked the ending, and I think I'll read this series closer together now (I'm tempted to read the third one next month), I'm also interested to see if the second Enola Holmes film follows this book....more

That interval in the US wasn't really necessary, was it? I feeli like I'm doing this one a disservice by comparing it to more intricate mysteries of today, but it was a bit shallow and even Sherlock's "Aha moments" weren't that impressive read in 2023.
But it's the first Sherlock Holmes mystery, and from the beginning we see that the story is written by Watson, who's retelling the events as he witnessed them. Sherlock helps the police in his eccentric ways in solving the mystery of the murder of two Americans in London. The writing style wasn't hard, it was just convulted, like Sherlock's explanations themselves. This book is 120 pages but the part set in the US was so sluggish, Ifelt like I was reading a much longer book.
