Asidwhen I read on the cover that this is "pride and prejudice but with dragons", I didn't know what to expect, but this was such a pleasent surprise.
Aside from all of the titles that became all jumbled up in the end, this was an enjoyable read. it was funny watching all of these dragons doing human things, like, writing letters, picking hats to wear, going to court, and even considering marriage proposals. all of these dragons are living the lives of victorian society, and the way the author adapted some of the things to fit dragon world is amazing. (forcing servant dragons to bind their wings so that they couldn't fly as please resembles the restrictions aristocratic humans put restrictions on their servants).
It felt like a mix of a lot of jane austen novels, with a dash of inspiration fromthe life of jane austen herself, and other novels from that same era, and i enjoyed it. it's only the second novel that I read where dragons are doing human things, and i think it's my new niche thing to look for in fantasy novels....more

We follow Tig, a young woman who goes back to the old twon of her ancestors to honor her grandfather, who was the mayor and a beloved hero of the town. While in town, she slowly discovers the truth about her heritage, the twon, her grandfather, and the woman who supposedly killed him.
We alternate in time, between present and past, as tig talks to the people who lived in that town, between those who viewed her grandfather as a hero, and those who didn't, and she relates that to her own personal experience and what she knows of her father and grandmother. It deals with heavy topics like rape, assault, abortion, abuse, and many others. and it filled me with rage for these woman. ...more

We follow the adventure of Aiza who aspires to be a hero, a squire to become a knight, for the kingdom. The same kingdom that's colonizing her land. So it manages to discuss war, colonization, xenophobia, cultural war. Through the fantastical world and war of Squire, we see how Arabs are living currently, whether in their homelands or when trying to assimilate as immigrants.
The ending gives me hope that there'll be a sequel, and I'm defintely hoping that it happens....more

It's a look at slavery with a sci-fi twist. We have Dana, a black woman married to a white man, who gets sucked back into the past to help a white boy in trouble. the problem is that white boy is her ancestor she never knew was white, and that he lives in the era before civil war, so she's instantly assumed to be a slave. She keeps going back in time whenever that biy is in danger, and watches him grow andd watches how her ancestors come to be, and it sheds a lot of light on her life as a black woman. It's heart-wrenching and raw and honest, but I think the novel would've been better...more

It gives us a full circle moment with Enola and her brothers and uncovering the secret of her mother, while also proving her talents as a detective. It had more emotions than previous books, but I'm still confused by their mother. It seems that she put a lot of effort in making Enola independant but she didn't raise her sons to respect their sister's independency, so in the end it doesn't matter if she's independant in that society, where her brothers have legal control on her.
Also, I can't believe that the 6 books in the series took place in just a year? what??...more

Also, loved her relationship with Mrs Tupper, as she always seeemed to be frustrated with her in previous books, but this one showed real concern and love between them. The mystery this time reintroduces a chracater Enola has helped before, so it was interesting. I just find it hard to believe that Enola hasn't run out of money yet, seeing as most of her work goes unpaid or the payment she gets isn't enough, but I think it's one of those things you have to not focus on.
