On my first read a few years ago, I gave it five stars, but this second read, I'll give it 4 stars, because though I do still appreciate the writing, I can see more clearly the issues with the problematic characters.
It's still my only Fitzgerald and I need to remedy that soon, I said before, "I loved how poetic his writings was, I felt like I wanted to take some paragraphs out of the book and just stare at them everyday, that's how beautiful some of descriptions of life and human emotions were" and this description of his writings still applies.
More from my first review: "His characters are flawed, they're racist and adultery is a recurring theme in this book. But these flaws made them more real. The way he described Gatsby's house and parties, made it so easy for me to imagine the lavish life he had. The book is set in New York, and I'm glad that I'm coming across more New York-based novels these days, but Fitzgerald's New York is lonely and shallow, though full of life." True. The writing alone warrants many rereads of this story.
"The book is basically Carraway retelling his story of knowing Jay Gatsby and how he became a big part of his life. A bit by bit, we know more and more of Gatsby and by the end, we're not really sure if we did know him for real or it was all an illusion." It's all about the characters in this novel, and I'm so glad I reread it with a newer and more mature perspective. ...more

The first in a fantasy trilogy inspired by Russian mythology and folk tales, and the amount of research and heart Katherine Arden poured into this book is so apparent. I have deep respect for authors who aren't from a certain country, but make their writing about that country seem authentic, and that's what she did.
It's a medieval story about a Russian family, living far from Moscow in their own little village by the forest. They live peacefully, tending to their treasured house spirits, believing in the folk tales, being Christians but never really abandoning the old gods. Vasya, our heroine, is from this family, and their lives get turned upside down when a priest comes into their little corner of the world and insist on them casting away all their beliefs, stopping paying tributes to the old gods, and living in fear in the name of Christianity, only Vasya doesn't abide to this rule, and she's the only one who sees who this new priest and his ways might bring all of their deaths when the old gods turn on them, and all the stories they thought were just fairy tales start coming to life right before their eyes.
I'm so excited to jump into the rest of the series, and it's officially put Katherine Arden on my favs list, because of her amazing writing style, her ability to really write about atmosphere and nature and fairy tales, and the portrayal of an amazing strong heroine. ...more

I don't read a lot of horror, so this actually made me shiver in some places. It's a story that starts with a creepy poem that sets a tone, about a sweet girl who does bad things when she's mad, and boy, does that have many layers to it. We're introduced to Jane, who's moving across country with her mom after her father dies, to her mother's old small town and old family home that she left and never came back to, oh, and also Jane eats paper to calm her when she's angry. I felt like I was reading a book about Gilmore Girls in Stars Hollow but make it horror.
As soon as they get to the small town and the old house, Jane feels something is wrong with the house and with the whole town, and bit by bit, she starts uncovering some secrets about her mom's family and herself and this weird big house they moved into, we also see how she and her mom deal differently with their grief.
The writing style is great, it kept me engaged, and I liked the unconventional ending, but I felt that some things were left unexplained or were glossed over, but it was fast-paced, creepy, had interesting elements, and it made me definitely interested in other works by Katrina Leno....more

I loved the aspect of amateur detective, but I also noticed how pip was really lucky most of the time to get access to a lot of the material and i'm glad that in the book ravi gets to shed some light on that: some doors open for pip who is a white girl, but these same doors weren't open for ravi, who is a brown boy. i still enjoyed it immensely after the reread and now i'm read to continue the series and finish it
English Review Below.
I usually steer clear of YA mystery/thrillers because the few ones I read get to be repetitive and juvenile and easy to predict, but this was a nice surprise! First, I didn't know there was a mixed media element in there, and that pumped it up a star instantly. Also, the main character, Pippa, was actually intriguing and somehow realistic? She wasn't a genius but she wasn't completely clueless too.
This follows Pippa who decides to make her school project about a murder case that was closed five years earlier, where two students in her town lost their lives, one being accused of murdering the other. The thing is, she believes that the one the whole town thinks is the murderer is actually innocent. So she starts bit by bit, doing her interviews and chasing clues to prove that, and what starts as a school project becomes something so much more than that. Midway through the book I guessed one of the endings, and I would've been disappointed if i would've ended with me guessing it entirely, but there were new surprises every time. I'm actually really excited to read the rest of the series now.
Also, I loved the little romance, I was kinda rooting for them to end up together. I mean, if solving a crime together doesn't make them fall in love, what would?...more

Warning, this bad has a sad ending. There's a hint of Romeo and Juliet in this love story between a black boy and a Jewish girl meeting in a posh private school. They fall in love and start to biew their relationship from their point of view, but also from the society's point of view, as a lot of people seem to have a problem seeing them together for so many reasons, and it makes them both aware of how deep the racism goes. But One of the things I liked here that unlike many YA novels where the parents' lives are so shallow or fading into the background or the parents don't even exist at all, Ellie and Miah's parents' stories are vibrant and are as important to the story line.
The story alternates POVs between Ellie and Miah, each chapter shows us inside the head of the other. The writing is gorgeous, and though it's all "love at first sight" type of story, it's not cliched and somehow fits the characters. It discuses race, bullying, family issues, double standards and hypocrisy, and police brutality. The focus isn't on the act of the police brutality itself, but on the consequences and how "inevitable" it seemed. It's sad that a book written 20 years ago would still be so relevant today.
The first chapter shows that this story ends sadly, but that didn't lessen the pain or the fact that I cried reading the last few chapters. I'm also definitely reading the second book very soon....more

There are these books that I wish I had a role in their existence, like writing them or in this case even translating them. This book took me by surprise, I wasn't expecting anything and suddenly, it's one of my favourite books ever and I'm slowly but surely stalking the author and collecting everything he's done. It's a very short story collection, the longest are two pages long and the shortest could be 7 or 8 lines, but they do pack a punch. It combines dystopia, sci-fi, dark humour, earth destruction, AI control, some mythology, magic and fairy tales. I mean it has a bit of everything and I loved it. It managed to combine a straight-forward style with deep meaning that not a lot of flash-fiction collections have managed to do. I honestly found myself re-reading some of the stories multiple times in awe. I applaud the author and I'm looking forward to buying my own copy and to anything else he writes!

For fans of "The Poet X", you should read this. It's a novel in verse across three timelines and three points of views connected by war, wanting something more of life, death and abandonment, the embodiment of Jeanne d'Arc, family and obligations, with a lot of Greek mythology references to my delight.
It follows Mary in the USA, a Greek-French girl living in Detroit, dreams of freedom and independence and not marrying the man her family sees fit according to traditions, her story takes a turn when she finds a box of letters between lovers during the World War. The second POV is Gio, a Greek boy living in Greece with his mother and sister, and all he dreams of is becoming a sailor and not being involved in war, till the unexpected happens. The third POV is Jeanne, a privileged daughter of a french doctor who gets called to war and she finds herself a nurse to all the wounded soldiers in home. They all have their struggles and it's all written so beautifully.
It was interesting to read that the story of Mary is the story of the author's grandmother, and she included some heartwarming pictures at the end of the book of her grandmother who inspired her to write this novel. I feel in love with the lyrical language and would love to read anything else the author write next.

This is my official first Neil Gaiman, and I loved it. It's really a modern fairytale with just the right amount of whimsy and intrigue and mystery to make me fall in love with the book and close it with a satisfied sigh.
The story starts with Dunstan and his story of love and magic that sets the scene at the city, where we see a normal English village in the days of Dickens, except for one thing that isn't so very normal, and that is the Wall with a hole in it, that separates them from the land of Faerie, and they're only allowed to go through it every nine years, when the faerie market is held to sell all sorts of magical items.
Then we jump 17 years to the story of our main protagonist Tristran, who goes off to catch a falling star from his small town, Wall, and venture into the world of Faerie to prove his love. He gets entangled in all sorts of mischief on his journey, and we all get the point of views of several other people, all aiming for that same star, all for different reasons. His journey and all the people he meets and the growth we see in him, from a boy to a man, is heart warming.
Also a fair warning: it has a brief gory scene of killing an animal.
I suspect that the movie adaptation is a treat as well, and I'm so excited to watch it....more

I didn't know this was part of a series of "atlas" books by National Geographic, this was a nice surprise, since I enjoyed this one a lot, I might have to go back and check the other two. The title is pretty self-explanatory, it's an atlas of improbable places, and honestly all of them would be wonderful as settings for horror or fantasy novels which did happen in many cases, which is fascinating. Each place doesn't take more than 5 pages, and it comes with a black-and-white picture of it, but I found myself googling each place for more pictures in colour. It goes into decent depths about each place and its current state. Note that this book was released in 2016, so something might've slightly changed, but it's not like it was written a decade ago, so I'd say it's totally reliable. The writing style was easy and approachable, which is something I find myself liking and appreciating National Geographic publications for.
This was amazingly adorable. I love the art and the wholesome relationships and all the complications they were setting up in this first volume. It's This was amazingly adorable. I love the art and the wholesome relationships and all the complications they were setting up in this first volume. It's the story of Hori, the girl who's put together at school, but no one knows she turns into a full-time housewife, taking care of her brother and their house in the absence of her busy parents. And Miyamura, a dark guy who's awfully quiet at school, but outside school he's super cheerful, oh, and has tattoos and piercings. Through some coincidence, Hori And Miyamura are the only ones that know this other side of each other, and it brings them close. ...more

A Korean family saga, starting with the Japanese occupation of Korea till many years later. We see Koreans living in their homes in fear of the Japanese among them, and the Koreans who went to Japan for better lives, only for them and all their generations to come to be treated like pigs. Some of the main themes are the lives of Koreans in Japan, the yakuza, the struggle of beauty, the history of colonial Christianity, immigration, the meaning of home and patriotism, wealth and poverty and discrimination, industries Koreans dominated in Japan due to lack of other opportunities, mainly pachinko and more. As Min Jin Lee said, she choose the title "Pachinko": "...Pachinko business and the game itself serve as metaphors for the history of Koreans in Japan - a people caught in seemingly random global conflicts - as they win, lose and struggle for their place and for their lives."
It's an emotional novel, spanning years and generations with shifting points of view of the members of the family, split into three parts, each indicating a shift in the tone and changes in the circumstances. It's a saga that begins with a matriarch, and you find yourself feeling for all of them, thrown into these horrible situations, and each death from that family really did hurt me.
It's sometimes disorienting to see 6 years passing between a chapter and another, but I was so sucked in this family, that I didn't mind the passage of time as long as we're seeing what has become of the characters. It left me crying, and I don't think I did it justice with this review but it got me really emotional and thinking of a lot of things I didn't know....more

If the families in some of the beloved Korean dramas were bigger and crazier and richer, this is them. At the heart of this story, there's the love story of Nick and Rachel, two Asian professors in New York, who have been dating for two years, when Nick invites Rachel to his home in Singapore to attend a wedding and meet his family for the first time. But Rachel doesn't know that he and his very extended family are crazy rich.
We also meet the numerous family members of parents, aunts and uncles, countless cousins and their families and all their drama, mainly revolving around money. It's a world filled with "rich people problems". It's hilarious, overly extravagant, and it took me some time to get used to the million names, till I got a grasp on the most important ones at least, and I found myself really interested in all of the dramas of these family members, not just the story of Nick and Rachel. The perspective shifts a lot from one paragraph to another to show how several characters are interpreting the same scene which was an interesting choice, but proved very effective in later chapters.
I can clearly see how perfect it was for an adaptation, to show all the glamorous lives these people live. I wasn't even sure before reading if I'd the rest of the series, but now I'm really intrigued enough to read the 2nd and 3rd books. Also, I can't wait to watch the film....more

This is the story of Shakespeare's family, as we peer into his life with an abusive father, how he supposedly met his wife whose childhood is imagined to be horrible as well, before veering into the main topic of the book when the plague hits England and supposedly their family and how they deal with it. The main outcome is known, which is the death of Shakespeare's son "Hamnet", and the author uses her lush writing to fill in the gaps of what might've happened.
The chapters alternate between the family's present when the plague hits Shakespeare's household, and the past of his life and how he met his wife, their families' stories and more things I don't know which are true since I haven't read any Shakespeare's biographies, and which are the author's attempt to fill in the gaps. The chapter where she envisions how the plague must've spread is alone a proof of how brilliant storyteller she is.
One of the interesting plot points is how all the characters are named, but never William Shakespeare, so even though we know that this novel is about his family, he is never named. The characters' thoughts felt so real, that even though most of what's in this novel are speculations based on very little facts, I felt like I was reading the actual thoughts of William and Agnes and their children Susanna, Judith and Hamnet. And the descriptions of how the plague came into their lives were chilling.
It's a novel about marriage, grief, loss, love, motherhood, family, and not at all about the success of William Shakespeare as a playwright, more about him as a family man and how his familial relationships supposedly were like before and after his successful career in London, up to the point when he wrote his play Hamlet, four years after the death of Hamnet. I cried multiple times reading this novel and I know I'll read anything else Maggie O'Farrell writes.

The novel starts in the autumn that Kim Ji young starts changing in the eyes of her husband. Her change comes in the form of seeming to possess or embody other women she knew in her life, whether her mother or an old friend. Then the novel is divided into set parts, each part dealing with a stage of her life: from childhood, to youth, to marriage and afterwards. So we know the story of this woman who embodies the women of South Korea. This novel had some aspects from "The Vegetarian", as it being about a wife undergoing mental breakdowns in a way because of the misogynistic society and her husband being the "first" to notice the changes or transformation.
Through the stages of her life we see how men are preferred over women in he society. Starting from pregnancy preferences, education rights, having the best things, priority in entering good schools and colleges, priority in getting jobs and promotions, and all the numerous expectations from women in work and home environment. We see how the most people who give their opinions on what women should do and endure during menstruation, pregnancy and giving birth are men who'd never experience this kind of pain.
The writing style was weird and almost dry, like it's a research paper, but by the end of the novel, we get to know why is that, and the last few sentences are honestly genius showing that no matter how societies progress, the change is never complete. Reading this novel hurt me because I could relate to everything, this really isn't a novel about misogyny in South Korea, it's the story of most women all over the word....more
