This is really the type of poetry I like! I just love rhymes. It was such an adorable poetry book about all different types of cats, and Eliot made each cat have an adventure of its own, like the cat who spends all day just sitting, or the indecisive cat, or the aggressive cat. making them order around mice and cockroaches or even be pirate captains.
I loved the imagination and finding familiar names after watching the movie. (the name Rum Tum Tugger is one of the most memorable names), and I really think any cat lover/parent will find/see attributes of their cat in one of the cats here. It's always funny when their actions change between very cat like (catching a flea) to very human like (drinking a scotch while keeping the watch).

a poetry collection written by two friends (or a couple), split into the seasons of the year, with some beautiful watercolor art. I don't really feel a poetry collection written by two friends (or a couple), split into the seasons of the year, with some beautiful watercolor art. I don't really feel the "poetry" in these poems, but they feel raw and emotional. It feels more like journal entries than poems, which really fits the short foreward of how this book came to be.
The author been through so much trauma and this feels too personal, as his way of dealing with it, and the notes left by his friend cheering him on really affected me. A lot about depression, losing a family member, death, breakups, unhealthy relationships, learning to love yourself, and self discovery. A lot of the pieces are hard and sad and triggering, but there's some hope in there as well....more

Having read the author's latest work, than jumping back to her very first book. I can see how she improved, but also how she somehow stuck to the idea of repition. There's no escape repeating ideas and phrases especially in a poetry book under one theme, but that hindered me from enjoying it fully.
It was decent and lyrical, some prose was beautiful, but I don't think it's too memorable....more

This is my first time reading for Billy Collins, and I think curated collections like this one are most suitable for first- time readers. It has some selected poems from previous collections of his, in addition to new poems, they were all new to me regardless.
He merges between dark humour and wholesomeness in an accessible way, and even though they weren't all mind-blowing, I found a lot of favourite imagery and food for thought in his poems. It's not your typical poetry, and I like that, I don't need me poetry to rhyme all the time to appreciate it, and for someone who doesn't read a lot of poetry, this was a good surprise which I enjoyed. He talks about nature, loneliness, writing process, poetry, relationships, solitude musings and others....more

More like 3.5? I love Bo Burnham. Just this month I watched his three comedy specials back to back, put his albums on repeat, and fell down the rabbit hole I never knew existed, and reading this book is just another step towards trying to understand him and everything he's trying to express.
Bo Burnham isn't just a comedian, as even during his most comedic bits, he throws in deep social commentary and discusses everything from privileges he himself have to mental illnesses and how they affect us. Each special of his is an experience and they all rely heavily on music, which appeals to my musicals-loving heart. I just wish he'd write a musical next.
This book of "poems" makes me think that I'd love to see from him a collection of essays in the vain of John Green's The Anthropocene Reviewed, or a novel in the vain of The Perks of being a Wallflower. Also we can see hints of ideas that manifested in his latest special, such as "A little bit of *everything*", also from previous specials, the song, "From God's Perspective."
I guess these type of poems rely heavily on performance, this kind of book would have been better performed or even read as an audiobook, as half of the humour and nuance of his writings lies in his performance. Still, I just love Bo....more

For fans of "The Poet X", you should read this. It's a novel in verse across three timelines and three points of views connected by war, wanting something more of life, death and abandonment, the embodiment of Jeanne d'Arc, family and obligations, with a lot of Greek mythology references to my delight.
It follows Mary in the USA, a Greek-French girl living in Detroit, dreams of freedom and independence and not marrying the man her family sees fit according to traditions, her story takes a turn when she finds a box of letters between lovers during the World War. The second POV is Gio, a Greek boy living in Greece with his mother and sister, and all he dreams of is becoming a sailor and not being involved in war, till the unexpected happens. The third POV is Jeanne, a privileged daughter of a french doctor who gets called to war and she finds herself a nurse to all the wounded soldiers in home. They all have their struggles and it's all written so beautifully.
It was interesting to read that the story of Mary is the story of the author's grandmother, and she included some heartwarming pictures at the end of the book of her grandmother who inspired her to write this novel. I feel in love with the lyrical language and would love to read anything else the author write next.
