Tolstoy's first novel or novels, written during his military service, and though it really seems autobiographical, Tolstoy kept denying that. But I still believe it holds too much details to inner thoughts of a person and how these thoughts progress to not be a little bit autobiographical. It's a portrait of our young narrator, through childhood, boyhood, and youth, during that time in Russia. Including his inner thoughts and fears, philosophy and beliefs.
My favourite part was Childhood, and I was angry while reading Youth with his bigotry and arrogance. The short chapters do feel like you're reading fragmented memories of someone's life. He tends to over describe, especially when it comes to nature. Also, it seems like there was an intent to write a fourth part, but that never happened.
We see a lot of the ideas he was raised to believe in like judging people depending on how many languages and which languages they use from Russian, French, German. and his prejudice against "foolish" women and people who aren't as "fancy" as him. The adult narrator seems to regret these thoughts that accompanied him and intensified with each phase from his life.
Childhood is about his innocence and shyness and inner thought and insecurities. Boyhood is about mood swings and contempt of everyone and holding steadily to his harmful ideas of himself and others and what's he's worth in society and his self worth. Youth marks the intensity of showing arrogance, ignorance, and condensation.
My biggest pet peeve is the way he addressed women and described them and criticised them. He would talk of them as "ignorant" or not worthy of engaging in a discussion or understanding his philosophical thoughts, just because they're women. When he describes a man for example, he talks of his ambitions and dreams and interests, but his talk of any woman focuses on her appearance, no matter how intellectual or talented they were.
I guess you could say that we see the early making of a genius writer, but for me, Childhood was worth reading, and the two second parts really got on my nerve. I give it to Tolstoy that he can write an aggravating main characters....more
It's my first Irvine Welsh read and I'm sure it's the last. This is a novel about Bruce Robertson, an officer who embodies everything that's bad, he mistreats and uses everyone around him in the worst ways. Put that on the side, he's got a worm growing inside him, and we see him changing and "interacting" with that worm. Both the beginning and the ending were great, which I thoroughly enjoyed despite the accent which was extremely hard for me to read and get through.
This is an interesting novel with an interesting concept, the "worm" part definitely added more to the story, since we only manage to know more of Bruce and his history through that worm!
My complaints are the accent and the lack of quotation marks (which is a lot!) I was set on giving it two stars, maybe even one, but that ending! earned that three stars...more

...more

It's a book about everything that's depressing, the main protagonist is a man who makes it his mission to disregard everything in life, from patriotism to love. Everything is fake according to him.
The writer takes with along this character from France to Africa to New York and Detroit back to France, and along the journey he goes through war, poverty, women, he goes through it all, and all these experiences reveal the sexist and racist man he is.
I don't have anything against the writing style, which I have to admit made it hard for me to get into the story, but the main character is a horrible person, and though you could agree with him on some bits, it's hard to accept anything he says. The book was really depressing as well, and I couldn't take it.
It's nice I'm getting out of my comfort zone, but this one was a bit too much, I don't think I'll go back to it again. ...more

(warning: this review might include a little bits of spoilers)
Through different individuals and families, Yanique manages to sew the story and history of the Virgin Island, its historic convergence to Britain/US, and how that affected the lives of its inhabitants a generation after another.
One of the most influential islands in this story is Anegada (the drowned land) and the inspiration behind the name, and it will prove to be the most effective and pivotal point of the novel.
This novel deals with, The Bradshaws and the Mckenzies, two of the main families of this story and focuses through the first part on their lives through the first major political transition the islands will be going through, from Denmark to the US and England. The Bradshaws, with an ambitious mother who kills her children and a father who desires his daughter and two sisters. The father also has a mistress, Rebekah Mckenzie, and he has a son from her, Jacob Esau, who will prove to be a really important part of the girls' lives afterwards.
The book's narration travels between the two sisters, rarely other characters, and mainly one of the old grandmothers of the island" through most of the book.
Through the second part tragedies like war and death happens and affect Annette and Eonna, the two sisters, who grow up alone. Eonna takes care of her sister and she always remembers her relationship with her father, which proves to be the most memorable aspect of Eonna's life.
The relationships in the book are messed up (Eonna and her father, Anette and Jacob, Eonna and Kweku ...etc). Every relationship is wrong and yet the beautiful writing makes you wonder, how can I love and hate this relationship at the same time?
Events take a big dramatic turns through the novel for Anette and Eonna, but the magical realism of the story adds more to the mystery. Anette's power of "knowing", Eonna's magical hair, Rebekah's obeah power ... and so on.
With the third part comes another dilemma Anette goes through, her men! Ronnie (the obeying man) who couldn't hold on to her, who gave her Ronalda, Jacob (her wrongful love) the one shell love forever even if she shouldn't, who gave her Eve Youme, and Franky (her husband) because to her was nothing else but a husband who bought her a house and gave her Frank. Through this it appears that Eonna and Annette differ deeply when it comes to love, as Eonna will always be in love with her father, even though she had her share of men but couldn't settle down, despite men still desired her after long years.
The forbidden love and its consequences made me wonder about something, Youme's "silver hair" is a sign of sin as Eonna says, because of the nature between Jacob and Annette, so how about Eonna?
Through the upcoming parts, we see more Americans taking over the Islands, and more islanders going over to America. One of the things I didn't like is that I felt that Ronalda was somehow neglected, as Frank and Youme had their own shinning points, it was as if Ronalda was sent to the US to vanish. I feel bad because I liked the little bits where she thinks of her "three fathers" and their uniforms and what each uniform means.
This book combines political movements and mythical stories in an everyday way that makes it hard to believe it. The fables of the cowfoot women and the deune were marvelous and I can't explain enough how I loved the chapters set in Anegada.
The description of colors and atmospheres, of feeling and everything is magnificent. I have to admit that Anette's way of talking was a bit hard to read, but I got used to it, and it was special. The ending was just what I wanted.
This is a book that I will keep thinking of for a very long time....more
...more

It's a dystopian novel in year 2045, and people have found their refuge in the online system OASIS which is this super advanced multiplayer immersive software/game. It tells the story of Wade and how he participates in this egg hunt, which is the biggest challenge in the history of OASIS.
Going into this book, I thought I wouldn't enjoy, because a lot of people said that if you didn't enjoy all the 80s pop culture references you'd not enjoy the book. and while it was true that getting the references added some excitement to the reading experience I enjoyed this book so much, more than I expected.
It's worthy to mention that even though he does mention a lot of movies, TV shows, video games, band and books, anime and manga, he doesn't mention the anime (HunterXHunter) which is weird because the whole concept of the book seems to be based on one of the anime/manga's arc called "Greed Island".
The extensive detail of the OASIS world is brilliant, and he would appeal to every geek, fantasy lovers, sci-fi lovers and even classic fiction fans would find something to love, he combines classic literature with rock bands in an easy to follow way. Halliday's character (creator of OASIS) is reveled slowly through the process of wade talking about him in his quest in the game. The game challenges and quests are quite innovative and really fun to read.
OASIS is simply an amazing evolution of multiplayer games. I don't think it's that far-fetched or impossible to achieve. The novel isn't written as a novel, more like a video game walk through. The characters are great, I loved Wade, even if he was way TOO smart and brilliant, all the plot twists towards the end were great, kept me on the edge of my seat, and the ending was cheesy and almost made me drop the rating to 4 stars, but I admit I loved its cheesiness.
I think this book would work perfectly as a movie, and I'm anticipating the movie....more

I loved this books so much, but I promise I'll never, ever, read it again (Though the brilliance of could reel me in again).
This book broke my heart. The brilliance of the prose and the metaphor Zusak uses made it easier for me to live in the story, and harder to get out of as soon as I was done.
This is a book that takes place during the second World War, in Germany, where there are Germans, Jews, and death. The whole concept of having the novel narrated by death was the cleverest idea (and though death seemed to be more humanized by the end), the way he told the story was unique.
Liesel is a German girl, who loses her communist family, and is sent to live in the town of Molching on Himmel street, with Rosa and Hans Hubermann. Where she befriends Rudy, the thief, and Max, the Jew. Her life changes drastically, as we see the effects of war on her and everyone around her.
The books Max made for Liesel are some of the highlights of the book, I can'e believe they didn't make it to the movie. Speaking of the movie. The book and movie are quite different. The movie focuses more on Liesel, but in the book, Max and Rudy shine more. The movie cut off a lot of significant scenes from the book as well.
One of the quirks of having the death narrate the book is that there's no suspense. Death reveals almost everything beforehand. and though you already know the ending for most of the characters, you still need to know and read more.
Some of the book's turning points: - Max's appearance at the hubermann's household, and his disappearance. - Hanz's actions during the jew parade. - When Lisel read the mayor's wife letter. - Lisel realizing her love for Rudy - Liesel seeing Max during the Jew parade and their interaction.
I could go on and on about this book, but this is a book I can't recommend enough. READ IT! ...more
