Each woman was unique in her own way, and I found myself rooting for them despite any bad thing they might've done, because their struggles and lives were so real and fleshed out.
The novel is a real look at the South Korean culture: it mocks the kdrama tropes, takes a look at obsession with kpop bands, highlights the insatiable hunger for beauty and plastic surgery in South Korea and how it has become the norm, tackles families and the differences between the rich and the poor, the prejudice within the same class even, losing love and clinging to hope and feeling hopelessness and the role of found families and how sometimes they could be even better than your blood family.
It's dark but somehow heartwarming, it's not like kdramas with their happy endings but it's not entirely bleak either. It's definitely one of my top books this year, and I'm so looking forward to the author's next book. ...more

This book is a must for every feminist, first to understand the background of women in literature, and second, to see what she does deserve as a writer and a member of society. I honestly thought this essay would be more straightforward, as in: a woman needs her own room to write, because of this and this and this, but Virginia Woolf takes us on a trip through time and in her mind, to see the thought process of this essay about "women and fiction".
We start with her receiving weird looks for walking on the lawn which is made for men, and being banned from the library without a male companion or a recommendation letter to set the tone of her era and the women's position in it, no matter their level of education. First she discusses poverty and how men until very recently in her time had no control of any money, even money they happened to earn. The, she starts analyzing writings and she focuses on Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, Tolstoy and others, to show the difference of writings circumstances and the end results. After that, she talks about the mind, and its two halves, the male and female, and how each of them results in a different book and reading experiences.
She talks a lot about the prejudices she faces as a woman and acknowledges her privilege of having left a fortune, and admits that this isn't something a lot of her contemporaries could own. But the conclusion is that a woman needs her own income and a room she calls her own to be creative, and creativity isn't a leisure or something only men are entitled to.....more

This is my first time reading this story, and though I was hesitant at first because the art style is so different from the movie, which I watched a long time ago, after the very few first pages I realized that it suits this creepy story so well.
Coraline is a story I feel that everyone knows of even if they haven't read the novel. It's about Coraline who's bored after moving to a new house and with nothing new to do and her parents busy with work, she discovers this mysterious door in that big house, and when she goes through it, she finds herself in a replica of her house, with two people who look like her mother and father, except that they have buttons for eyes, and the creepy story begins as she starts to understand what's happening to her real life and how it's affected by this another dimension. I've got to say that the Cat is my favorite characters....more

This is so dark and grim and depressing and I loved it. It's typically the bad side of superheroes, as each of them has their own flaws, some are greedy while others try to kill millions, you know. I don't know if I should classify this as dystopia or alternate reality, but in this world, the US has banned masked vigilantes after a rise in their activity, and the story open with the murder of one of them, years after they became illegal.
Each character has their own way of telling their story, but I think I liked Dr. Manhattan chapters the best, and also the journal entries of Rorschach were great. Each one of them got his or her heartbreaking backstory. Also, the mixed media aspect of the story was magnificent, and it was amazing seeing how everything comes together, with stories within stories.
I felt sometimes it was too dark or too philosophical or too gory, but it was done very very well, that I felt like slow-clapping at the end. It's definitely worth the read, if you can take a very bleak story. ...more

I didn't realize this was a poetry collection, somehow I though it wan a novel in verse, something similar to The Poet X, and while it does give the same feeling and almost talks of a similar experience, it's a poetry collection not a novel.
The author is a spoken word poet and this is my 2nd book in this style, and it's growing on me and I'm loving it. She's talking about love and family and loss and self-confidence and faith and self image and a lot of other relatable subjects. Also talks about belonging, being an immigrant in England, and her image between her heritage and her current home. I found a lot of quotes and lines that really stuck with me, and others I couldn't relate to, as with a lot of personal writings.
It's a decent collection and gives you something to think about, but I couldn't say that I was blown away by it.

It was delightful, empowering, swoony AF,A historical romance novel with a big touch of feminism and focus on the Women Suffrage Movement in England. It was delightful, empowering, swoony AF, and featured one of my favorite romance troops: enemies to lovers.
Our love interests are Annabelle, the commoner who gets introduced to the suffrage movement as the patron of her studies in Oxford and starts helping them as a way to repay them for supporting her tuition which lands her in the way of the Duke of Montegomrey. And Sebastian, the duke, is a seemingly cold-hearted man focused on retrieving his estate and rarely shows his true feelings or interests until he meets Annabelle.
Their courting was adorable and their intimate scenes were really swoony, and I liked the struggle Annabelle had between her desire for Sebastian, the societal norms, and her ideas and beliefs for women's rights and what her situation should be in their relationship. I also loved to see how she affected Sebastian, in more than on way, from becoming a soft man not afraid to show his feelings to becoming an ally to the movement. Some of the things I also loved: her friend group, her portrayal as an intelligent woman, and him not being intimidated by her intelligence.
I would say that the book was a bit slow at times, but I read the last 30% in one go, because I couldn't sleep without knowing how its going to end. But I was pleasantly surprised by the ratio of sexy times and advocating women's rights and standing up to the movement, as there's no reason for these two not to exist side by side, right?
A delightful read and I can't wait for the next book that features one of the girls in the friend group and her story. ...more

Uh, is this a new favorite of the year? and maybe of all time? why, yes!
This book ticks all my boxes, there's fantasy/magical realism, there's two different ways to read it, it's like a saga spanning so many years, and lifetimes!
This book starts as the bind-up of 3 manuscripts a baroness left to a book binder to make them into one book, and he prefaces the story of the baroness and tells us that there are two ways to read this book or "manuscript". The book is clearly divided into 3 parts: "The Education of a Monster" is a story supposedly written by Charles Baudelaire, "City of Ghosts" is a noir thriller in Paris during the 1940s and it's heavily related to the 1st story, and "Tale of the Albatross" is as they described it "an autobiography of a deathless enchantress" and truly it is! It's almost where all the magic happens!
In its essence this novel is a historical love story of two star-crossed lovers, with a unique look and approach to immortality. With a touch of a loose retelling of Frankenstein or the making of a monster. The writing is lush and surprising fr a debut author, and though the author is a man, I didn't feel his female characters were jarring. It's truly genre-bending, as you can't truly say it's historical fiction, or fantasy, or a war story, or a retelling.
I think it's best not to go into this book knowing any more, as it was such a fun ride!! and I'll definitely buy the book when it's released to reread it in the other sequence! I highly recommend it and I'll be keeping my eye on this author's future releases....more

Take or leave it - Any Dan, Dick, or Harry.
