once again, vera takes inspiration from her life in her graphic novels, but this one doesn't have any fantastical elements. it's just following her at age 9 when she was struggling to make friends and finds a chance to go to camp and maybe finally have friends. i loved the lessons she learned.
also love her art style. she takes one color and makes it her entire palette, and somehow it works very well. this had humor, great lessons, realistic depictions, and great overall feeling....more

cute read, would work better for middle grade readers who won't look into the plot that much....more

This takes inspiration from Jen Wang's childhood and a certain friendship. it gives us insight into the lives of chinese americans, the pressure of being perfect syudents and excelling in everything so as not to disappoint the parents, the differences between chinese american children themselves and the differences between them and the american children.
Moon's perspective was refreshing and I can feel that she was a great friend to have....more

It also ends in a way that sets it up to be a series following these children in their small cozy town, where some strange magical things are happening.
We follow mainly CJ and Parker, two 11 years old kids, one of them is a talented photographer and the heroine is an aspiring journalist, who finds herself chasing a story that seems normal in her small town (kidnapping pets?) but she slowly discoveres that there's something sinister going on and it's something she can't share with the adults around her.
It was interesting to see the parents play active role in hindering her adventures and the efforts she undertook to go on her adventures, as it seems in some middle grade books, that parents are almost non-existent in order for the kids to run wild.
Anyway, it was just okay for me. a fun fast read, but not too memorable. I might be interesting in reading a sequel...more
