I decided to start this shortly afre finishing watching Lost for the first time, because that's what I discovered about reading these type of pop fiction books (the events need to be fresh in your mind, or maybe you're rewatched it enough times to remember everything), and as with any book that have a number of authors, some essays were good and others were boring.
I was thrown off a bit when I started reading it, because the first 5 or 6 (I don't really remember) essays were about the same thing, (I think it was the time travel plot in the show), and I was wondering if repetition is going to be a theme in this book, and it was. but again, sometimes you needed a couple of essays to really nail a certain idea.
You don't need to have previous knowledge of philosophy, becaause each philosopher mentioned, we get an idea of how he relates to the theory the author is tackling, also the appendix at the end was helpful.
Lost as a show is one of those shows that are really open to a lot of interpretations (especially the earlier seasons), but the religious themse were ever so apparant, and that shows in these essays as well.
overall, it was good reading it shortly after watching the show, otherwise I would've dropped till I got a chance to rewatch it....more

Finally, reading the memoir of the queen of geeks. I never knew anything about Felicia Day's background or bringing up, she was always to me a youtube sensation: a gamer, a web series extraordinaire, and a certified geek. I didn't know about her homeschooling and how that shaped her, her journey with gaming and how she achieved a healthy balance after being a gaming addict, her journey to become an actress, the behind-the-scenes of making her web series and establishing Geek and Sundry, and more about her that I discovered in this memoir.
If you're a geek and into gaming and geek culture, you must know about Felicia Day somehow, and this book just serves as a good addition to the books about geek and fandom culture. She's awesome, funny, and inspiring. While she goes over her journey in this book (which does warrant a book), she also gives advice to people in the field, and most of them are still sound advice for today's climate. She's one of the very first people who put being a geek on the map.
Honestly, if anyone asked me about who's really living the dream, I'd say Felicia Day. One of the best memoirs I read....more

First of all, I loved the use of the mixed media here, and it made use of a lot of things people in fandom really did rely on, like blogs, chats, messages, fan art, fan fiction, and others. It also rang so true, because it reminded me of my intense fandom days when I had a Livejournal blog and was part of many forums, I'm still a fangirl today but not as hard as I was several years ago, and as shown in this novel.
It's a YA novel about two girls fans of a police show (it reminded me a lot of Brooklyn Nine Nine, and it's what I had in my mind every time I read the fics). Gena is an 18 years old girl about to start college, she's suffering from mental illness and neglect and finds solace in the internet world. Finn is a 22 years old woman who graduated college and is living with her boyfriend and feels aimless but feels like herself when she's online talking about the fandom. These two girls enter each other's lives and form a very strong bond.
I was surprised when it took a darker turn in the third part of the book, so that should be a warning, it's not very light-hearted all the way through. The writing was okay, it felt very YA and fit the whole fanfic, but it's not mind-blowing. It deals with mental illness, family relationships, and found family. It was emotional and I think I would've loved it more had I read it when I was 18....more

This was a light-hearted read but with very simple, if not mediocre, writing. It's a story about three nerdy friends in a convention. They've come all the way from Australia to the USA for their first convention, and they're all different personalities. We've got the famous youtuber with the movie role, we've got the fangirl geek of Firstone books (similar to Harry Potter), and we've got the nerdy boy all-around. Two love stories take place during that convention, and we see the main characters dealing with big issues like being on autism spectrum, social anxiety, panic attacks, sexuality, relationships and heartbreak, and the need for emotional support.
The writing style felt very juvenile, almost like a fan-fiction, but I did like the idea. I think if I read it when I was 16 or 15 years old I would've loved, but it felt too young for me. I'd still recommend it for young readers in love with fandom and convention cultures, but it's not the best definitely in that genre....more

A little preface to the review: This is the third in a series but I didn't read the first two, and though it doesn't affect the particular romance in this book, it's apparent that previous romances and the initial introduction to the fandom would be important, so I do advise reading the previous books if you want to go deeper, or you can do what I did, and read this book as a standalone.
This is a YA romance that combines a lot of tropes: first of all, it's a Beauty and the Beats retelling (minus the Stockholm syndrome?), Fangirl-esque for a fandom similar to Star Wars, with adding a bit of the books between chapters, like what happened in Fangirl, A slow-burn enemies to lovers with a bit of hidden identity, and of course it's a bad boy/grumpy with a good girl/sunshine combo.
Rosie is a die-hard fan of Starfield and a bookworm who's having a hard time after her mother's death and falling for a boy in a mask who she never got to know his name and she loves villains in stories, Vance is an actor and a bad boy and he's got a bad reputation so he's "cursed or banished" to a little town to learn his lesson, he's also the mysterious boy Rosie fell in love with unknowingly to both of them. The two of them come together because of a library and a dog.
I loved all the Easter eggs to the story of Beauty and the Beast, also the nods to different fandoms. I just wish we'd seen more of that "night" that made them fall in love instead of seeing glimpses of it every now and then, and the pacing was rough and the character's opinions shift almost abruptly, but I won't deny it was like candy, and I liked the humour in this a lot....more

It's not my first time reading Fangirl, as it's one of my favourite novels, but this new rendition of it is so refreshing and made me fall in love all over again. I loved the little differences they did, like how they story starts and some of the interactions, while still staying true to the story, also the art is gorgeous and really brought these characters to life. The Simon/Bazz sections were just perfect, enough as to not interrupt the story. I read this in an hour and I didn't want it to end, I'm guessing from the last pages that they'll be 4 volumes in total, so I'm anxiously waiting.
This is the story of Cath who's starting college, she's losing the security of always depending on her twin Wren and being with their dad, but she's also a big fangirl of the Simon Snow fandom (pretty much Harry Potter), and she takes comfort in writing one of the most well-known fanfics in the fandom. She tackles anxiety and social situations while finding love and getting to know new people and learning more about herself....more

This is such a good romance, with the good mix of fluffiness and smuttiness that I need. A novel about two main characters who form a bond over writing fanfiction for their favourite show (think: Game of Thrones - the remarks and resemblances are uncanny, down to the show-runners! :D). But the catch is that while our main heroine April is a regular woman, a fat and beautiful geologist, the other one Marcus is one of the main leads of the show, and one half of the main relationship they write about! You've got it right, it has a bit of a resemblance to "You've Got Mail" as well as fan and celebrity relationship. It's one of the very few celebrity-with-regular-person stories I actually liked.
Through media, the two of them meet face-to-face, not knowing that the other is their friend from the fanfictions website. They both come with their own emotional baggage because of their families: Marcus has dyslexia which made his parents disapprove of him all of his life, April is fat and not conforming to the standard image her parents and most of the people around her want her to fit. But they find solace and home and bravery in each other. The novel also includes at the end of each chapter: fanfiction snippets - chats - parts of Marcus' past film scripts (most of them were cheesy) - snippets of the books the show is based on, and more. and I really loved that aspect of the novel as well.
As well as with any romance, I won't love it 100%, but I loved how it tackled their issues, their chemistry, the side characters esp. Alex and I'm excited the next book is about him, how much of a cinnamon bun Marcus is and April's confidence with him, their intimacy was really steamy.

It's certainly in the 1st or 2nd place, and the proof is that it's been on repeat in my life ever since I managed to get my hand on it.
This book was fun, just because I knew a lot of anecdotes about the process of the show, some specific details about episodes I had just watched that made me appreciate even more, and I LOVED knowing at what point in their lives these actors were just before being cast for that role, because honestly now I can't picture anyone else but them.
I mean, I could've found out a lot of these stuff from browsing the net but the author made a good job of compiling them seamlessly. Of course, watching it in later years, made me realize the problem of sexism and lack of diversity and stereo-typicality, but that never for once stopped me from enjoying the jokes, the actor's reactions and how they work and flow together effortlessly, the same with Seinfeld.
I recommend this book for any friends fan, it's definitely worth the read if you're invested in the show. ...more
"As you Wish" is the memoir of Cary Elwes, the lead actor in "The Princess Bride" playing Pick by: Good Mythical Morning Bookclub
I love a good memoir!
"As you Wish" is the memoir of Cary Elwes, the lead actor in "The Princess Bride" playing Westly, and this book recounts all that had to do with making this particular film and how it affected his life afterwards.
I was lucky I got introduced to this world, I watched the movie not too long ago (the original novel by Goldman is on my soon to-read list), because of course watching the movie is a necessity when reading this book. Cary talks about how he was just a novice British actor by the age of 23 when he was cast to play the role, the amazing crew he grew closer to during the shoot, whom were all perfect fit for their roles. They way he talked about them made me fall in love with them, Robin as the sweet Buttercup, Andre as the gentle Fezzik, Mandy as the talented Inigo, the wonderful writer Goldman, and the director or the circus leader Rob, and many more of the amazing people he encounters while shooting the movie.
The movie is a sweet fairytale, with pirates and sword fights, and a princess and a splendid white gown, and a one true love story. and Cary manages to capture the magic he felt when making this movie, and you can tell that it did really leave its mark on his soul. I loved the movie, his performance was humorous and so knight-like, and I loved reading his thoughts on this movie more. ...more
