1- The Third Resignation: is he dead? is he alive? who knows? marquez really knows how to play the reader
2- The Other Side of Death: the lyrical writing with the gothic setting really works for me.
3- Eva is inside her Cat: the story is really meandering, reminds me of one hundred years of solitude, and then that final line is like a gut punch
4- Bitterness for Three Sleepwalkers: marquez's stories are too short and sometimes they need some fleshing out, but that doesn't mean that they aren't beautiful!
5- Dialogue with the Mirror: poetic and gorgeous
6- Eyes of a Blue Dog: they meet in a dream it's one of the saddest stories i've read
7- The Woman who Came at Six O'clock: the dialogues just keep you on the edge of your seat
8- Nabo: he really likes makes us think whether these people are dead or alive. are they hallucinating or are these ghost ruminations?
9- Someone has been disarranging these Roses: sad and melancholic
10- The Night of the Curlews: fascinating. it seems like a story about three ghosts wondering what has happened to them, but you never know with marquez
11- Monologue of Isabel watching it rain in Macondo: continous rain which starts messing the perception and reality of the characters -------- 12- Tuesday Siesta: i love the dignity of the mother as she sets an example of her daughter
13- One of These Days: a political stance between a dentist and the mayor
14- There are no Thieves in this Town: the torment a thief goes through when he steals something. what i liked most in thiss one is the wife's "ana" character, she's resilient.
15- Balthazar's Marvelous Afternoon: a cagemaker fascinates the town with a brilliant cage he made
16- Montiel's Widow: i loved how it seems at first that the woman doesn't understand why no one attends her husband's funeral and then we start seeing how hated he was in the town and how that causes her to close up on herself

It's about friendship, finding your people, loneliness, making your voice heard, hanging on to your passion even if someone makes fun of it, standing firm and finding solace and power in those you love.

the ufo felt only like a footnote or a sidenote to this book, which is supposed to be a novel, but read like non-fiction, or vice-versa? it looks at our protagonist, who is interested in space and ufos from a small age, and as he grows up, we see how he finds that extraterrestrial experience in music, drugs, and religion, in a journey that continues on through his life.
there was some things to like about it in the beginning, like the short shocking chapters, but sadly, it wasn't for me. ...more

This is a heartbreaking story that is told completely in pictures without using a single word. it tells the story of a man who immigrates from his troubled country leaving behind his wife and daughter, to earn enough money and send it back to them. when he reaches his destination, he starts encountering a lot of people with similar immigration stories and similar goals and hopes. the art is simply amazing! it's so similar to our real world with different fantastical details and creatures and items used by people in their daily lives...more

We follow mainly two high-schoolars who meet a man doing magic tricks in an abandoned amusement park, challenging all their misconceptions about adulthood and doing what you're told to do instead of following your own dreams.
The characters design was beautiful but the backgrounds and everything else wasn't to my taste, and the ending felt abrupt, so there has to be some continuation or something. but I liked it and I can see how it'll get adapted into a show...more

It's a look at slavery with a sci-fi twist. We have Dana, a black woman married to a white man, who gets sucked back into the past to help a white boy in trouble. the problem is that white boy is her ancestor she never knew was white, and that he lives in the era before civil war, so she's instantly assumed to be a slave. She keeps going back in time whenever that biy is in danger, and watches him grow andd watches how her ancestors come to be, and it sheds a lot of light on her life as a black woman. It's heart-wrenching and raw and honest, but I think the novel would've been better...more

brief reviews of the stories:
1- None of that: that was an experience. a mother and daughter seem to be driving aimlessly looking at other people's houses, but the mother's obsession with others' houses goes beyond just looking at them. it set off some anger inside of me and some pity for these people
2- My Parents and My Children: this was weird. it felt like a dream or a nightmare, about a summer house and people who seem to disappear in it and some family drama.
3- It happens all the Time in this House: I'm not sure what's happening in these stories, this seems to be about resignation and grief and getting over lost of loved ones through routine or maybe hanging on to the past. the lyrical writing is strong, but again these all feel like scattered shots.
4- Breath from the Depth: what was this I just read? the story of a woman waiting for death in a house that's slowly being sucked out of life. she makes lists and packs up her things, she imagines people and seems to have dementia. it gave me the chills towrads the end, as it felt like a proper horror story.
5- Two Square Feet: I feel like there are too many parallels between this story and the previous one. the boxes, the remembering things, characters being lost in their own minds, the weird family situation. very sad and really captures the feeling of lonliness.
6- An Unlucky Man: this was really uncomfortable. a pedophile-lolita-type story.

It's one of Miyazaki's oldest works that was never translated till now and it never got the film treatment, but it's so pure Hayao Miyazaki, that as the translator's note shows, it's really affected by and has affected other Ghibli films he worked on.
Also, it gave me the vibes of Legend of Zelda, especially the new two games....more
...more

She's an aesexual girl from a family with lots of secrets and magic, as she herself can wake the ghosts of the dead, and she' accompanied by the ghost of her pet dog Kirby. Ellie, or Elatsoe, is deeply connected to her Six-Great grandmother, and her tales of her grandmother's talents with ghosts and facing other magical creatures were some of the highlights of the book.
The events kick off when Ellie finds out that her cousin has died mysteriously, and she enlists the help of her friend Jay and her ghosts dog and many other wonderful characters to solve the mystery of his murder and she finds herself part of a bigger mystery surrounding a mysterious doctor and a town with a dark secret.
It's a spooky novel, yet it's very heartwarming. It's our contemporary world but there's magic, ghosts, vampires and evil scarecrows all part of the everyday life. Also the secret gift of Ellie and her family is explored deeper. Why don't they just wake up the ghost of their dead cousin if that's something they can do, but the depth to their stories and heritage is wonderful in explaining a lot of the things. I loved the roles of parents and elders, as they weren't pushed aside as it happens regularly in YA novels. I also loved the friendships, especially between Ellie and Jay, it was so heartwarming and sweet, and it's really nice to see such a wonderful pure friendship between a boy and a girl, without it having to be something more.
The author managed to weave heritage and culture beatifully in the narrative, and it also managed to be educational about the colonialism of America and the situation of the natives. the writing style was strikingly beautiful, and I was amazed it's a debut. I'm really all the more eager to read more by this author!...more
