We follow Tig, a young woman who goes back to the old twon of her ancestors to honor her grandfather, who was the mayor and a beloved hero of the town. While in town, she slowly discovers the truth about her heritage, the twon, her grandfather, and the woman who supposedly killed him.
We alternate in time, between present and past, as tig talks to the people who lived in that town, between those who viewed her grandfather as a hero, and those who didn't, and she relates that to her own personal experience and what she knows of her father and grandmother. It deals with heavy topics like rape, assault, abortion, abuse, and many others. and it filled me with rage for these woman. ...more

the ai thought this book would be something else, but it still had some chapters that sent me reeling and terrified of humans and life on this planet.
the author looks at plastic and its production and the way it invaded our planet through different events, events that honestly i won't choose to focus on in a book about plastic, but she made it work most of the time, so it was things like: the atomic bomb and war and the making of planes and weapons, the albatross and all the plastic they ingest, trash we find in our every day life especially an old car part that she becomes attached to, the life of small towns suffering from all of the plastics factories that pollute their surroundings first.
it alternates between memoir writing: as she writes about herself, her journey to write this book, her journey asking about the plastic car part she found, her journey asking and collecting testaments from people affected by plastic pollution, her journey to participate in cleaning oceans from plastic, and then biography writing: about the people who had a role in making the atomic bomb, the people who had a role in making aand upgrading fighter planes, and those who knowngly on unknowingly made the world worse by developing these weapons.
I had a few issues with the way the book was sectioned, and some chapters were repetitive, and i liked the first part so much more (the albatross chapters made my heart race and made me stop reading because of how devastated i was after that). she's a poet and that appears in some of her writing....more

It's interesting that we're seeing characters from the previous series: humans who turned into ghouls, and ghouls who are integrated as humans (kind of). Arima is suspicious, even when he's only mentioned by name. I wonder when will Kaneki regain his memories and what will happen. Also, how the hell did Hinami end that way?...more

It's an amazing feat. just being able to withstand all of that, but I wish it was interspersed more with what was happening on shore during each day, and what did they tell people and what the efforts were to find him, maybe some interview with family memebers and friends and their theories about what happened to him.
It's a good story about survival, but maybe it was really best as a series of articles in newspapers published at intervals, because when it's collected in a book, it has become overly repetitive....more

This series has me conflicted. because in Tokyo Ghoul, the CCg investigations chapters always bore me, but in this sequel, we're following (so far at least) the investigators mainly, I'm hoping it will change, because as a first volume, this one isn't as intriguing as the first volume in the original series.

#1- Office Hours by Ling Ma: I'm not sure what this story is supposed to mean. It started as a normal contemporary story about film student and her professor and their tight relationship, but then it takes a magical realism/dark twist and I feel like I didn't truly understand the point of that end. like it was a nod to the films she discussed in the story maybe?

3- Me, Rory and Aurora by Jonas Eika: uhhh, weird/kinky family/lovers dynamic isn't my thing. but that wasn't even the weirdest thing about this story, which felt like a dream caused by drugs, a bad dream.

#6- Wisconsin by Lisa Taddeo: messed up and realistic characters.
7- Ira & the Whale by Rachel B Glaser: felt so surrealist. a bunch of men stuck inside a whale and what they actually think about when they're facing death
8- The Commander's Teeth by Naomi Shuyama Gomez: The writing style wasn't to my taste. about dentists working in rural areas and they encounter a military commander who comes for a checkup
9- The Mad People of Paris by Rodrigo Blanco Calderon: about mad people in paris at the metro and all of their conspiracy theories. is the protagonist just an observer or one of those mad people? the line is blurred. it was interesting, but all the political talk lost me a bit
*10- Snake & Submarine by Shelby Kinney Lang: a devastating story about a man going through the suffering of women from cancer, some he knows and another he's writing about.
11- The Mother by Jacob M'hango: felt like a folktale, but it was as if it was missing something

15- After Hours at the Acacia Park Pool by Kristin Valdez Quade: a story about kids and teenagers and navigating life and having different feelings for the first time and all the wrong choices and decisions teenagers make.
16- Happy is a Doing Word by Arinze Ifeakandu: a sad story set in nigeria, wehre we follow a boy growing into a young man and the struggles he goes through

I don't know how I feel about the ending, that epilogue really threw me off. Epilogue aside, it really was a tragic, gory, bloody manga. The last volume had too many reveals and surprises, too much for one single volume. I'm starting right away with the sequel, but I have a feeling it will be focused on the CCG, and I'm not a fan of their dynamics.
Kaneki and his story arc and how his mottot of "protecting everyone" really came full circle, when he starts remembring his mother. Kishou Arima doesn't seem like the straightforward CCG hero he poses to be. There are some characters whose fate is still uncertain to me, did they die or are they still alive?
