A Sikh England fan who was photographed on the official Three Lions' Instagram page has hit back after being racially abused on social media.

Turbaned Jag Singh, 29, who owns a grocery store in South Shields, said he proudly wears the England Shirt and travelled to Germany for England's quarter final match with Switzerland.

Whilst in Dusseldorf, he was photographed by The Three Lions' official social media team, echoing the Football Association's bid to promote diversity.

His picture, in an England shirt, was liked by nearly 400,000 people and shows him smiling as he watched the Three Lions progress to the semi-finals on penalties.

But an X user insulted him by posting a message: 'Not English. Go home', which has angered him and many England supporters.

Mr Singh told MailOnline: 'I was upset about it. The fact that I was born in this country, work hard and have paid thousands of pounds to go out and support the team. The fact I'm a different ethnicity, I wear a turban and I'm a Sikh guy and I've got a beard doesn't mean I am not British. It was upsetting.

'But it's like something that we're kind of used to, as sad as it sounds in 2024. It's like we're used to it because there's nothing that really gets done about it. The fact that it is still on X now speaks volumes. The post and her account.'

The horrific post, which appears to be from a racist using a pseudonym, is still up on X and was criticised by thousands of England fans on the social media site and Tik-tok.

One well-wisher Mark Wilkins wrote: 'An absolutely disgusting post, this guy was born and raised in the UK, serves the North East through his shop and can be seen as a community champion. Shocking!!!'

Another supporter wrote: 'Did you know Queen Victoria adopted a Sikh as her son. The young man in question was Maharaja Duleep Singh, He became a ward of the British government and was introduced to Queen Victoria. The Queen took a personal interest in him, treating him with great affection. English!'

A third person wrote on X: 'What a vile thing to say… he is English, and who cares if he wasn't? I'm sure there are plenty of non English people supporting the team. Football is there for everyone to enjoy, it's meant to bring us together not divide us. I suggest you get a grip, coz this is embarrassing.'

Despite the horrific post, Mr Singh returned to Germany to watch the semi-final and says all the fans at the tournament have been 'lovely'.

He said: 'We went back out for the night time game against the Netherlands and I had no problems in Germany. Not one person said anything. The German people were lovely. The English fans were amazing. The atmosphere was amazing, even the Switzerland fans. It was absolutely amazing. They had no bother at all.

'It was nice to see that everyone just got on, no matter what ethnicity you were, no matter what background. Everyone was just getting on and having a good time, and supporting.'

The Newcastle United fan's love for England has not been knocked by the post and he is confident the Three Lions will beat Spain in the final in Berlin and bring the trophy home.

Mr Singh added: 'I'm still going to support England, no matter what 100 per cent. We're just going to support them. We're not going to let these sort of people let me down.'

'I'm going to watch the final tonight with my family. I think England are going to win 2-1 in extra time.'
